The ‘Recover Street Film Festival’ has been to a number of cities, showcasing short films showing how people have recovered from addictions. The festival aims to raise awareness of drug and alcohol related problems. But instead of showcasing the films in a cinema, they were screened on Fargate. Shoppers were invited to grab a pair of headphones and watch the videos.
As thousands of students arrive in Sheffield, and get involved in freshers week activities, South Yorkshire Police have launched a campaign to keep them safe. They’ve joined forces with both universities to reduce violent crime after drinking too much alcohol.The campaign coincides with ‘freshers week’, and aims to make a safe start to the new academic year. They’re aiming to reduce violent crime, by asking students ‘What’s at the end of your drink.

The topic of Syrian refugees has been the talking point for many people, here in Sheffield there have been public talks, demonstrations and more. A zero-emissions refuelling station for hydrogen-powered cars – claimed to be the first of its kind in the country – has opened. ITM Power created the site at the Advanced Manufacturing Park near the M1 in Rotherham. It uses electricity generated by a wind turbine to split water into its constituent parts which are hydrogen and oxygen. The company says a hydrogen car could now fill up with enough fuel for it to reach London from South Yorkshire and that it only emits water vapour as it runs. They also say that because fossil fuels are not used in the production process, the station is the first carbon-neutral with zero emissions. Sheffield Live went down to find out more…
Five venues across Sheffield are showcasing work from major European Art Collectors, highlighting the city, and the public and private. ‘Going Public’ includes vast collections of some rarely seen work. Pieces by different artists will be on display at the Millennium Galleries, Graves Gallery, the Sheffield Cathedral, the Site Gallery and Sheffield Hallam University until the 12th of December. Louisa Briggs is the Exhibition Curator at the Millennium Galleries.
Sheffield City Council have launched a campaign to ask the public to give money to charity, rather than beggars in the city centre. They say this is the best way to help those who beg, as it shows there are support services available. It’s a joint campaign with South Yorkshire Police, and a number of local charities such as The Cathedral Archer Project, and Turning Point, which work to end homelessness. Sheffield Live spoke to Chief Executive of the Cathedral Archer Project, Tim Renshaw.
Jeremy Corbyn was elected as the new Labour Party Leader on Saturday 12th September. The Islington North MP won with 59.5% of the vote. Sheffield Central Labour MP, Paul Blomfield, told Sheffield Live his reaction to Corbyn’s win.
Thousands of people went along to Clifton Park over the weekend, for the Rotherham Show. The annual event included hundreds of stalls, a pop up high street, local charities, a diversity festival, and a vintage vehicle rally which was new for this year. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has visited the Moor Market in Sheffield as part of the Crossroads Mission in the region. He’s visited many locations including schools, universities, churches, community centres and pubs. His visit involves twenty one other bishops, including Bishop Libby Lane, the first woman to be appointed as a Bishop in the Church of England. He spoke to a number of traders in the Moor Market.
