Christmas on The Moor

Christmas celebrations have officially begun in Sheffield today. The main Christmas lights have been switched on in the Peace Gardens by John Birkhill who takes part in many events to raise money for cancer charity, Mac Millan. This comes after a social media campaign for him to push the plunger on the cities’ lights. Bands have been performing in the Peace Gardens throughout the day. People have been getting involved in the Christmas party, at ‘Christmas Light’s and The Moor.’ The event included rides, Santa, reindeer and a real life nativity.

Meet The Doctors

Junior doctors and members of the public took part in a ‘Meet the Doctors’ event in Barkers Pool today. The grassroots movement says the Government’s proposals for a seven day NHS is not fair and not safe. This comes after plans for a new contract which would implement a seven day service of the NHS. Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt has already offered an eleven percent pay rise for junior doctors, and a number of concessions. As part of a national campaign, Junior Doctors were encouraging the public here in Sheffield to sign the petition, and have a photo taken to share on social media.

Hundreds join ‘Save Our Steel’ rally in Sheffield

Hundreds of people took part in a rally in Sheffield today, to call on the Government to take action and save the British steel industry. The Trade Union Council, steel workers from across the country and their families marched from Tudor Square to the City Hall, where they heard from a number of speakers. Thousands of job cuts have already been announced in Scunthorpe, Teeside and Lanarkshire. The TUC fear more cuts will hit South Yorkshire.

Sheffield turns purple for World Prematurity Day

People gathered in the Peace Gardens to mark World Prematurity Day. Around one in ten babies worldwide are born prematurely. Landmarks around the world have turned purple to raise awareness, remember those who have lost babies, and celebrate the children who have survived. Julie Bathie, a Senior sister of the Neo Natal unit at Jessops Wing, organised the event in the Peace Gardens.

Sheffield honours the terror victims in Paris

Sheffield joins millions of people across the world to have a minute silence at 11am this morning to stand in solidarity with the french people, after the simultaneous terror attacks in Paris on Friday evening that left at least one hundred and twenty nine people dead and more than three hundred and fifty injured.

Ice Skate-a-thon to raise money for Children in Need

For Children in Need, Meadowhall hosted a Skate A Thon to raise money for the charity. The centre invited lots of people including Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Talib Hussain, retailers and customers to challenge themselves by skating on what they referred to eight hour relay to help raise thousands of pounds. Brammall Lane to host Special Olympics opening ceremony

The Special Olympics will be making it’s way to Sheffield in 2017, it will be the 10th in history of the organisation and the second to be held in Sheffield. It is the largest registered charity providing year-round sports training and competition opportunities for people with learning disabilities. Almost 1.2 million people in the UK which is 2% of the population are affected. Rotherham prepares for the first ‘Reclaim The Night’

Women in Rotherham are being invited to walk through the town centre on Saturday to ‘Reclaim the Night.’ The event aims to campaign against all forms of abuse towards women, take back the streets and make them safe for everyone. The national movement already takes place in many towns and cities, including Sheffield, but it’ll be the first for Rotherham. Councillor Emma Hoddinott and Councillor Jo Burton from Rotherham Borough Council told Sheffield Live more about the event and why they organised it.
