Council seeks new tree campaign prosecutions

Sheffield Council are seeking fresh prosecutions of tree campaigners for allegedly breaching a recent injunction relating to tree felling. Simon Crump from Myrtle Road and others were handed the legal notices today after crossing safety barriers on Meersbrook Park Road set up by council contractors undertaking tree felling works. The court injunction was issued in August to eighteen people including Councillor Alison Teal after they previously crossed safety barriers in a bid to stop the felling of trees. New sculpture park at Park Hill

The second phase of the Park Hill flats redevelopment has been launched with the unveiling of Sculpture Park Hill, part of a new public artspace. The first commission and the only permanent work planned for the 3.5 acre site are a series of disc-shaped concrete plinths. The Park Hill Plinths have been designed through a collaboration between artist Keith Wilson and landscape architect Tim Osborne. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

IKEA Sheffield store opens in Tinsley

Hundreds of customers queued up to be among the first through the door at the new IKEA Sheffield store near Meadowhall, on the site of the former Tinsley Wire firm. The Swedish home furnishing giant has created nearly 500 jobs in the region with the IKEA Sheffield store being the 20th opened in the UK. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Tinsley art project re-imagines industrial past

Following the unveiling of plans for the region’s largest ever public art project, Sheffield Live! spoke to artist Alex Chinneck about the ideas and inspirations behind the planned sculpture trail. The £450,000 Onwards and Upwards project funded by E.ON, will use 100,000 bricks and features five chimneys. Two form an arch across the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, one appears to float in mid-air, another is tied in a knot and a fifth appears cracked and illuminated from within. Waterside festival launches at Victoria Quays

The Waterside Festival has launched at Victoria Quays with a day of water based activities at the Sheffield canal basin. The festival, organised by the Canal and Rivers Trust, includes kayak sessions and introductory guides to fishing. For the second day it will move on to Kelham Island and the River Don. Allen key peregrine on display

An unusual sculpture of a peregrine falcon created with Allen keys is display outside Sheffield’s train station as part of IKEA’s Wonderful Everyday tour of Sheffield.  The sculpture was designed by local artist Jason Heppenstall who is known for his animal designs made of reclaimed materials. It is part of a series of events to mark the launch of the company’s new store in Tinsley. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Olympic Legacy Park official opening

The Olympic Legacy Park in the Don Valley has been officially opened by the former Sheffield MP and ex-Sports Minister, Richard Caborn. The 35 acre complex is set to be part of an innovation distrct for health and wellbeing research and learning including the new UTC college, Oasis Academy School and an indoor arena that will be home to Sheffield Sharks basketball team. The outdoor spaces will feature two running routes, a 100m track and 3G sports pitches. The park will also include a hotel and business offices. Former drug addicts support September recovery campaign

Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Coordination Team is sponsoring Recovery Month in September to increase awareness of substance use addiction and to celebrate recovery. Hundreds of people who are, or have been affected by addiction will come together to assist those struggling with substance use to find help and support. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Mick Hartley, a former drug addict and founder of KickBack Recovery.
