Awareness week puts hate crime in the spotlight

An information stall on all forms of hate crime has been set up in the Moor Markets as part of National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2017. Hate crime reports have soared over the last eighteen months with peaks after the Brexit referendum and following terror attacks in London and Manchester. Reporting of disability hate crime has doubled in the last two years. Azz Mohammed spoke to Saskia Peat, coordinator of Sheffield Safe Spaces.

South Yorkshire restaurants join Rohingya support action

More than 50 restaurants in South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire have teamed up to organise a dinner evening to raise money for Rohingya refugees. According to the United Nations, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya muslims have arrived in Bangladesh with minimal belongings gathered as they fled Myanmar in the wake of sectarian violence and persecution. Mobile classroom promotes higher education

A new campaign is taking a mobile classroom on the road in a bid to increase the number of South Yorkshire teenagers going in to higher education. Education chiefs involved in Higher Education Progression Partnership South Yorkshire launched the mobile classroom in Barkers Pool with students from the University Technical College among the first to road test the new vehicle.  The campaign will travel across South Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. Research shows that fewer young people in the region go on to higher education at either a further education college or a university.

Green Party conference award for Sheffield councillor

Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor, Alison Teal has received the most impressive Councillor achievement award at the Green Party conference in Harrogate. Teal has been a central organiser in the campaign to preserve Sheffield’s trees from Sheffield Council’s mass tree-felling programme and has faced suspension from the Council, arrest and a Council-backed court injunction. Hundreds in anti-fracking rally at Barkers Pool

Anti-fracking campaigners gathered in their hundreds for a rally at Barkers Pool to call for a ban on fracking and for fossil fuels to be kept in the ground. Organisers say fracking is incompatible with the government’s commitment to tackle climate change. Fracking involves injecting water, sand and chemicals into the ground at high pressure to create fissures that enable extraction of oil or gas. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Identities explored in Winter Gardens exhibition

Arts charity, Ignite Imaginations, has presented a new exhibition at Sheffield Winter Gardens exploring issues of mental health and identity. The project has been development in partnership with Adullam Homes and support of the National Lottery. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Louisa Golob, chief executive of Ignite Imaginations.

Learn to Recreate, a Sheffield-based social enterprise, has been showcasing world fashion products made in Sheffield. Art studios upgrade planned for Castlegate quarter

Sheffield-based Yorkshire Artspace has submitted plans to refurbish its Exchange Place studios in the Castlegate quarter as a location for artists and creatives. The former South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive building will house up to 80 artists but is in need of modernisation.
