Exhibition challenges infant loss taboo

An exhibition exploring the taboo of silence around stillbirth, miscarriage and sudden infant death syndrome is on display at The Art House Sheffield. Remembering Baby is inspired by academic research and highlights the hidden side of infant loss. It features memory boxes, notes from bereaved parents to their children and artwork illustrating their loss. The exhibition uses visual and audio art to explore how both parents and medical staff experience and encounter death “at the very beginning of life”.

Extreme sports centre gets go ahead at former ski village

Sheffield’s ski village and surrounding area is set to be brought back to life as a ramped up Extreme branded sports, leisure and entertainment destination, Sheffield Council has confirmed. The Parkwood area is to be transformed with the prospect of bringing thousands of visitors and hundreds of jobs to the city as part of a £22.5m development across the 28 acre site that will include new mountain bike tracks and the re-instatement of Sheffield’s much-loved ski slopes. Sheffield city centre to get free public Wi-Fi

A public Wi-Fi service is to be rolled out from next spring across Sheffield city centre providing free internet access for residents and visitors. The service is to be installed and operated by locally-based internet service provider Idaq Networks which will generate revenues from user data, advertising and corporate services. The announcement by Sheffield Council follows a tender process to select a suitable provider. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Radio show launches record label

A popular weekly radio show on Sheffield Live community radio has led to the setting up of a record label and the launch of a first CD for music and comedy duo, the Glummer Twins. The Steel and Wire Show, produced by Harry Welburn, focuses on bluegrass, americana and old time folk music. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield ranked second in city stress index

Sheffield has been ranked as the second most stressed out city in the UK, according to a new survey released by insurance group AXA. According to the report 86 per cent of people who live in Sheffield say they are stressed at least some of the time during a typical week, the second highest score in the UK behind Cardiff. The research which forms part of AXA’s Stress Index, is based on a survey of 4000 adults in the UK. The report also found seven per cent of Sheffield residents feel stressed constantly, 41 per cent say their personal finances are the main cause of their stress, 37 per cent are worried about their health and 36 per cent are concerned about the health of their friends and family. Musical adventure hits the right note

Sheffield charity, Music in the Round, have commissioned a concert and storytelling performance for children featuring a music-loving dog and cat. Stan and Mabel and the Race for Space is an illustrated story with original music by children’s composer in residence, Paul Rissmann. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Music in the Round executive director Deborah Chadbourn.

Aung San Suu Kyi stripped of city freedom

Sheffield Council has revoked the Freedom of the City honour for Myanmar’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, due to her continuing silence on the persecution of Rohingya muslims. Suu Kyi was awarded the Freedom of the City in 2005 for her commitment to democracy and human rights. The honour is the highest Sheffield can bestow and Suu Kyi is one of only eleven foreign dignitaries to which it has been previously awarded. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
