Peace in the Park celebrates 15th year

The Peace in the Park festival returned to Sheffield for 2017 with the message of reclaiming peace in the world and the power of community action. The arts and music festival is celebrating its fifteenth year since it launched in 2003 and is still run entirely by volunteers. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Doc/Fest 2017 gears up for June launch

Doc/Fest, Sheffield’s international documentary film festival, is set to deliver another spectacular programme of events for indie and documentary film fanatics. With over 170 films on show, the festival will include immersive and interactive documentaries using virtual reality and other technologies to tell factual stories. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Dan Tucker, curator of alternative realities, and Luke Moody, director of film for Doc/Fest. The festival takes place 9-14 June at venues across the city.

Rum Festival comes to Sheffield

Trafalgar Warehouse hosts the travelling Rum Festival this weekend in Sheffield. The Caribbean and Cuban themed event features live music, dancing and street food as well as over 100 different varieties of rum to taste. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

SheFest fringe festival celebrates women and girls

The SheFest fringe festival was in full swing on the streets of Sheffield at the weekend with music, dance, fashion and workshops across the city. Inspired by International Women’s Day the city-wide festival ran throughout the week and culminated in a weekend of celebration of women and girls. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Film festival marks Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transforming Cinema film festival is being held at venues across Sheffield this weekend to coincide with Transgender Day of Remembrance on Sunday, 20 November. The film festival, produced by E.D.E.N Film Productions, brings together speaker events and films on trans issues and productions from the LGBTQ community. Transgender Day of Remembrance, is an annual memorial to those murdered as a result of trans-phobia, and highlights the violence faced by the transgender community. In Sheffield there will be a vigil at 6pm in Hallam Square. Shamaan Freeman-Powell spoke to festival organiser Claire Watkinson of E.D.E.N. Film production and film producer Taylor Le Fin.

Street Film Festival raises awareness of addictions

The ‘Recover Street Film Festival’ has been to a number of cities, showcasing short films showing how people have recovered from addictions. The festival aims to raise awareness of drug and alcohol related problems. But instead of showcasing the films in a cinema, they were screened on Fargate. Shoppers were invited to grab a pair of headphones and watch the videos.

Sheffield Live! Joined thousands of people in Millhouses Park for the EID Festival in the Park.

The cross cultural event celebrates the end of the month long festival of Ramadan, when millions of Muslims around the world go on a month long fast in which they do not eat or drink during daylight hours. MC Nige compared the main stage, with other entertainment including fun fair rides and stalls.

Sheffield Live! had its own stall with presenter Jawwad Janjua headlining both days, providing entertainment for those at the event and interviewing people who were attending the festival, including the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Peter Rippon and Local MP Paul Bloomfield. Jawwad was joined by fellow Sheffield Live! presenters Jawaid Qazi, Shafaqat Mohammed and Wajdi Raweh.
