Deaf people facing barriers accessing health and social care in Sheffield

A report by Healthwatch Sheffield has found that people who are deaf or hard of hearing face multiple barriers leading to discrimination in accessing health or social care services.  The Not Equal report, based on consultations with 75 Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing people indicated that many had experienced a poor level of service in places like hospitals and surgeries due to a lack of communications support. Deaf students come dancing at City Hall

Deaf and hearing impaired students from schools across Sheffield joined artists from the Northern Ballet at City Hall for the day long Teenfest workshop of dancing and drumming. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to organiser Gillian Wilkinson.

Citizens Advice Sheffield to develop services using British Sign Language

Citizens Advice Sheffield has been awarded a £25,000 grant from the Martin Lewis Fund to develop advice services for people who use British Sign Language (BSL). The project will offer digital advice via Skype to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and whose first language is BSL. The funding will enable tailored support to BSL users in new ways that could be rolled out to Citizens Advice services in other areas. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
