Project Nova to support ex-Forces personnel in South Yorkshire

Project Nova is an initative of ex-Forces charity Walking With The Wounded to support former military personnel who have entered police custody. First launched in East Anglia in 2014, it is delivered in partnership with RFEA, the Forces Employment Charity (RFEA). Project Nova reports that veterans engaged with the programme have a re-offending rate within a year of just 4 per cent, compared to 46 per cent of adults released from prison as a whole.

Mental health charity under threat

Mental Health Action Group Sheffield may cease to provide vital services after a Sheffield City Council funding decision. The local charity has been told that from 2017 it will no longer be guaranteed an annual grant of £10,500. Established 25 years ago, MHAGS, is a user-led mental health charity. The funding has enabled the charity to provide drop-in services and support to those who have suffered or are suffering from mental health issues. Charity to offer safe place for Sheffield’s homeless

A new charity project, Nightstop South Yorkshire, has been launched for young people facing homelessness in Sheffield. The project set up by charity Depaul UK will provide emergency accommodation for those who face sleeping on the streets or other unsafe places. It will operate through a network of volunteer hosts prepared to offer young homeless people a safe place for the night. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield and Labour MP Clive Betts were among others attending the launch. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Dan Walker charity fundraiser returns to Hallamshire Golf Club

Sports reporter Dan Walker’s star studded Walker Cup celebrity golf match is returning to Sheffield for another year, helping to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity. The event raised around £30,000 last year, bringing the UK’s first fully digital 3T MRI scanner. This year Walker plans to raise at least £50,000 for the charity. New road race planned for Sheffield

Charities, civic leaders and guests gathered at Sheffield’s Winter Garden to celebrate the arrival of the new Asda Foundation Sheffield 10K – a major new road race for the region. The event takes place on 30 October, on a new route starting in Arundel Gate and taking runners along Charter Row and Ecclesall Road, before skirting the edges of Endcliffe Park. With thousands of runners expected, it looks set to bring a boost to scores of local good causes. The latest addition to the Asda Foundation Series, the Sheffield 10K is staged in partnership with Sheffield City Council. Charity for the homeless wins £60,000 grant

The Archer project, a Sheffield charity for homeless and vulnerable people, has won a £60,000 grant from Lloyds Banking Group. The charity will receive £20,000 a year for the next three years to help homeless and other vulnerable people across the city. The Archer Project helps people in need of food and shelter and also supports the homeless to gain valuable skills. They rely mainly on donations from members of the public. Sheffield Coat Drive to keep homeless people warm

Two Sheffield charities have joined together in a campaign to help keep homeless people warm. ‘The Sheffield Coat Drive’ has been organised by young people’s homeless charity, Roundabout, and The Cathedral Archer Project. They’re encouraging people to drop off unwanted coats, which can either be given to rough sleepers or sold in the Roundabout charity shop on Union Street.

Ice Skate-a-thon to raise money for Children in Need

For Children in Need, Meadowhall hosted a Skate A Thon to raise money for the charity. The centre invited lots of people including Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Talib Hussain, retailers and customers to challenge themselves by skating on what they referred to eight hour relay to help raise thousands of pounds.
