Volunteer fair offers opportunities to make a difference

Over thirty charities took part with stands, exhibitions and advice stalls in the Sheffield Volunteer Fair 2017 held at The Circle, Division Street. The event highlighted some of the the volunteering vacancies available and how to get involved in making a difference in the community. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Rebecca Cropper and Nichola Harding of the City Hearts charity.

Tree charity suspends work in Sheffield

Tree planting charity, Trees for Cities, has said it is suspending all funding, support, and activity in Sheffield due to concerns with the council’s tree felling programme. The UK charity works internationally to promote greener cities and has planted more than 25,000 trees in Sheffield over the last ten years. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Charity promotes physical activity in cancer recovery

Macmillan Cancer Support are urging people to get active after cancer treatment, with benefits including improved health, reduced isolation and fewer side effects. According to the charity, which has been holding mobile information sessions in Sheffield city centre, being active can improve strength, aerobic fitness and flexibility, all of which can aid recovery. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to cancer information specialist Caroline Kipling.

Sheffield schoolboy braves the shave for charity

Jorge Silva-Bland, twelve years old, has decided to cut off his flowing locks and donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust who make free wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment. Jorge took up the charity challenge seventeen months ago when he was just ten years old. He was further motivated when his uncle was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Not happy with achieving the minimum seven inches required for real hair donation, Jorge continued until he had twelve inch tresses. Now he has decided to ‘brave the shave’ to raise funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity and to complete his hair donation pledge for children facing hair loss. Charity offers trio of opportunities to support the homeless

The Archer Project is asking supporters to get involved in food parcel sorting and meals service alongside their annual sleep-out for the homeless. The number of rough sleepers in the UK is on the rise for the sixth successive year with official figures showing over 4000 people sleeping out in 2016, more than double the numbers of 2010. As part of their annual fundraising sleep-out, Sheffield charity the Cathedral Archer Project are inviting volunteers to help out with food parcels, breakfast and lunch for the homeless. Homelessness charity Roundabout celebrates 40 years of service

Sheffield based charity Roundabout are celebrating 40 years of helping vulnerable young people at risk of homelessness in Sheffield with an anniversary fundraising campaign. The registered charity is asking supporters to donate forty pounds each to contribute towards their annual fundraising target of two hundred thousand pounds. Sheffield Live! reporter Sham Powell spoke to Tracey Jackson, deputy chief executive.

Charity worker, “people need action not only words”

Prime Minister, Teresa May has outlined plans to tackle what she described as the “hidden injustice” and stigma of mental illness. The PM said there will be additional training for teachers, an extra £15m for community care, and a £67.7m investment into online services such as self-checks to help diagnose mental health in its early stages so surferers can get the help they need. Mrs May’s speech comes as she outlined her plans to use the state to create a “shared society”. Tim Jones is the founder of Sheffield mental health action group, a charity organisation where mental health surferers meet to socialise.

 

Creative arts charity CADS acquires new workspace

Sheffield charity CADS, has taken over a former foundry, Eagle Works in Attercliffe, to provide low cost space for creative arts projects. The building was home to a steelworks firm which went in to administration. Now CADS is seeking to bring the building back to life. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Kieren Ancliffe.

Local charity campaigns on disability hate crime

On International Day for People with Disability, local charity, Disability Sheffield, is raising awareness of hate crimes against people with disability. In partnership with the Showroom Cinema and Warp Films, Disability Sheffield screened the BAFTA nominated film “Dead Man’s Shoes” which takes a stark look at the effects of disability hate crime. The main aim of the screening is to raise awareness of disability hate crime in the region. South Yorkshire firefighters hold open day at Eyre Street

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service held an open day event at their Eyre Street station today to raise awareness of their work and to raise funds for charity. There wash a car wash for charity donations, an exhibition of old fire service vehicles from the National Emergency Services Museum, and a demonstration on road collision safety.
