South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service launch electrical fire safety campaign

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched an electrical fire safety campaign today. It comes as figures show an increase in electrical fires, from 150 in 2013 to 190 in 2015, whilst other types of fires have significantly reduced. The fire service blame the increase on products like phone chargers, washing machines and e cigs, as well as over loading sockets and charging equipment for too long.

Can Education change the world?

A meeting took place over the weekend at the city centre in Victoria Hall with the Sheffield Educators Underground, a project initiated by teachers who are members of the Industrial Workers of the World Union. They believe that education in the UK is making learning more bland, exam focused and career orientated. Sheffield Live caught up with Chris Wellbrook who is one of their members to hear about their plans on education and his views on the government’s U-turn on academies.

HMS Sheffield crew remember those who died during Falklands War

The former crew of HMS Sheffield gathered in the city this weekend to remember those who died when the ship was blasted by a missile during the Falklands War. The event was organised by the HMS Sheffield Association, a group of veterans dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the ship lost in the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina and two other ships with the same name.

Doc Fest 2016 launch

People gathered at the Curzon cinema for the official launch of the Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival. Doc Fest is the Uk’s largest documentary festival, and the third largest in the world. At the event, documentary makers come from all around the world to showcase their talent, and network to promote their work. Kathryn Smiles went along to the launch, and spoke to Festival Director and CEO, Elizabeth McIntyre.

Parents keep children off school in protest over changes to SAT’s exams

Parents and their children were took part in a national campaign, ‘Let Our Kids Be Kids’. The ‘strikes’ were part of the national protest against the latest changes to SATs exams for seven and eleven year olds, which parents argue are stifling creativity and putting kids under too much pressure. The government is planning to introduce a new marking system that gives a single national standard result in the form of a pass or fail. Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has suggested the changes will make British kids more ‘internationally competitive.’

Make Good in the Woods

Local wood designers have opened the doors of their workshops and offered demonstrations of their crafts in Ecclesall Woods. It was all part of the Ruskin in Sheffield 2016 celebrations. Ruth Nutter from ‘Make Good in the Woods’ told Sheffield Live more about the event.

Lots gave Labour West Ecclesfield victory

A tie in the number of votes for two candidates in the West Ecclesfield ward meant a drawing of lots to see who would take the seat. The names were written on two pieces of paper and put in separate envelopes which were then placed in a ballot box. The winner Labour’s Zoe Sykes name was drawn out and she was duly elected.

Whirlow Farm – Animal Artwork

Creatures from Whirlow Hall Farm have been getting creative this week producing unique animal artwork which was showcased at an exclusive art exhibition in Sheffield. The animal artwork produced by a range of animals including guinea pigs and ducks were being auctioned to raise money for the charity and to fund educational projects at the farm. Our reporter Simon Thake went along to investigate.
