Guineans in Sheffield to celebrate country’s independence

Hundreds of Guineans across Britain including the country’s ambassador to the UK were in Sheffield to celebrate the 58th year of Guinea’s independence. Events included a football tournament in which Nigerians, Liberians and Eritreans took part at St Aidans pitch and a party at Vestry hall on Cemetery road. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield streets closed after WWII bomb unearthed

South Yorkshire Police have cordoned off Matilda Street and surrounding roads, following discovery of a World War II munition on a construction site. The same area was sealed off last week when three explosives were found by builders. A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers are currently in Matilda Street, Sheffield, after a device, believed to be World War II munition, was discovered during construction work. “Police were called at around 9.30am this morning.” The site has been secured by police, who are liaising with the military explosive ordinance disposal unit.

Orgreave campaigners host justice conference

The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign hosted a conference in Sheffield for campaigners on police justice. As well as Orgreave campaigners the conference was addressed by members from the Shrewsbury twenty four campaign and the Rotherham twelve campaign. The Orgreave campaign continues to fight for a full, independent inquiry into events at Orgreave on 18 June 1984. Police make fresh appeal to catch Tommy Ward killers

Police have made a fresh appeal for information, one year on, in the case of 80-year-old Tommy Ward. Ward, who was found in his home in Maltby with life-threatening injuries one year ago, was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until he died of his injuries on 23 February 2016. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to the senior investigating officer for the case DCI Victoria Short about the latest developments and the public appeal.

Hallamshire Golf Club cheer on Fitzpatrick at Ryder Cup

As Europe set about defending their Ryder Cup, Hallamshire Golf Club is cheering on local lad Matt Fitzpatrick. The rookie from Sheffield is playing in his first Ryder Cup after excelling on the amateur circuit. He has been fine tuning his golf skills at Hallamshire Golf Club since he was a school boy. Fitzpatrick joins fellow Sheffielder and Masters Champion Danny Willett on the European Ryder Cup team. The Europeans have won the last three tournaments. Simon Thake reports for Sheffied Live!

Liberal Democrat leader slams police chief sacking

The leader of Sheffield’s Liberal Democrat Group Shaffaq Mohammed has condemned the Police and Crime Commissioner’s decision to remove Chief Constable David Crompton. Councillor Mohammed questioned whether crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings should have acted earlier rather than waiting until two months before Crompton was due to retire. Crime commissioner defends decision to seek resignation of South Yorkshire police chief

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings has defended his demand for the resignation of Chief Constable David Crompton. Crompton was originally suspended after an inquest jury concluded police conduct contributed to or caused the deaths of 96 football fans at Hillsborough in 1989. The former chief constable, in response, has said the PCC’s resignation call was “fundamentally wrong” and he would take legal action. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
