Pakistani community celebrate QC appointment

Members of Sheffield’s Pakistani community gathered at Arooj restaurant on Friday to celebrate the appointment of Gul Nawaz Hussain as Queens Counsel. Hussain, of Bank House Chambers, is the first Sheffield barrister to be appointed QC in over fifteen years and he is the first British-Pakistani QC in South Yorkshire. Blowfish Theatre brings Trump satire to Sheffield

Sheffield’s Blowfish Theatre company will bring their latest production, Trump the Musical, to Theatre Deli in May, after touring in London, Birmingham and Manchester. The satirical show takes on US politics follows last year’s success with the company’s first production, Boris the Musicals. Lord Mayor brews up for charity

Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy, took charge of the kettle to brew up support for five local charities including Sheffield Young Carers as part of a city-wide charity fundraising campaign. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield residents evacuated after gas leak

Residents in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield were awoken by police around 3am on Wednesday morning with a warning to evacuate after a gas leak in Hatfield House Lane. More than 20 people were told to leave their homes and taken to the nearby Concord Sports Centre. Cadent Gas, formerly National Grid Gas, said the leak in Hatfield House Lane at the junction with Belhouse Road was caused by damage to a gas main during street repair works. Hatfield House Lane and Winkley Terrace were closed as a result of the incident. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to some of the residents affected.

Free health checks offered at football clubs

Free health checks are to be offered to fans at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium in an initiative in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University & Weston Park Hospital. The third session took place prior to the Blades home game against Middlesborough with the club hoping it can encourage fans to adopt a healthier life. Hundreds join Sheffield trees rally

Hundreds took part in a rally in Sheffield city centre to protest against the felling of trees under Sheffield Council’s Streets Ahead programme. The tree felling works are part of a £2.2 billion private finance initiative (PFI) contract awarded to Amey to resurface the city’s roads and pavements over the next 25 years. Sheffield Council say all the trees that have been marked to be cut down are either dead, diseased, dying or dangerous but campaigners claim many healthy trees have been felled unnecessarily.
