‘The Big Ride’ for Palestine

Cyclist from Sheffield, London, Bristol and Edinburgh have been taking part in the big ride for Palestine. Riders from our city left on Saturday and arrived at Elbit factory in Shenstone on Monday afternoon where they protested against the manufacturing of drones which they claimed are sent to Israel and are use against civilians. ‘The Big Ride’ is an initiative by supporters of the Palestinian people which combines a love of cycling with practical solidarity and awareness raising, especially around the plight of children in Gaza. Masters Champion Danny Willett will be aiming for gold this Summer as he makes the long trip to Rio. Sheffield Wednesday’s under 14’s lost on Youdan final

Over the last few days, some of the world’s top clubs have been competing in Sheffield this week for the second year of the Youdan Trophy. Nearly 800 players took part in the tournament and that has brought international football of the very highest standard to the city. South Yorkshire responds positively to weapon amnesty

After three weeks of amnesty in South Yorkshire, more than 50 weapons and 200 ammunition have been handed to the police across the region. The amnesty was launched to provide a method for people to dispose of any firearm or knife safely and quickly, with no fear of being prosecuted for possession. Deadly IS blast in Syria

Forty four people have been killed in a bomb attack in the city of Qamishli in north east Syria. The blast was caused by a truck bomb near the kurdish security headquarters off the border with Turkey. The so called islamic state have said it was behind the attack. Sheffield’s BHS on The Moor set to close on Saturday

The BHS store on The Moor is set to close this Saturday, with other stores at Meadowhall and in Chesterfield closing next month. Sheffield’s BHS is one of the oldest shops, with many members of staff working there for over twenty years. It’s attracted shoppers to The moor area of Sheffield, which is currently being developed. Centre Liaison Manager for The Moor, Sandra Barley told Sheffield Live her reaction to BHS closing down.

Sheffield set to benefit from greener buses after £1.3 million of government funding

Sheffield bus passengers are set to benefit from cleaner, greener bus journeys thanks to a £1.3 million of government funding confirmed by Transport Minister Andrew Jones. Sheffield and 12 other local authorities across England were awarded £30 million funding to buy low emission buses and install charge points and other infrastructure. Sheffield’s £1.3 million will be used to fund 44 new buses which will be fitted with hybrid technology to reduce carbon emission in the region.

Rotherham Council break the silence on suicide

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council have launched a campaign to ‘break the silence’ on suicide. The campaign, which has been supported by South Yorkshire Police and the NHS Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group aims to support middle aged men, and encourage them to talk about their concerns. This comes after suicide figures increased to just above average in the town, and national figures highlighted that men aged 45 to 59 had the highest suicide rate from 2014 to 2015, for the second year in a row.

Sheffield production company take wake boarders beneath the streets

A Sheffield production company have taken two local wake boarders beneath the city to film them in action along the storm drains. ‘Low Line’ by Salt Street Productions aims to rediscover what is known as the Megatron. The drains were built by the Victorians and were designed to hold back the flood water, then release it back into rivers. Salt Street Productions specialise in adventure sports videography, and previously produced ‘Red Run’ on the abandoned Sheffield Ski Village.
