Muslims in Sheffield condemn terror attacks

Members of the Muslim community in Sheffield have come together to express condemnation of last week’s terrorist attack in Westminster. Using the hashtag #notinourname members of the community called for harmony and a united front for all religions in the face of violent extremism. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to community members at the Madina Masjid mosque.

Campaign calls for return of free travel passes for the elderly

The South Yorkshire Freedom Riders held demonstrations outside Barnsley Interchange and Sheffield train station to call for free travel to be restored for pensioners. The rally sought to bring pressure on South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and train operating companies to reinstate free travel passes. Sheffield charity says eating disorder cases on the rise

South Yorkshire Eating Disorder Association has seen an increase in its case load as more people with eating disorders seek support. People with eating disorders can only access NHS statutory treatment once their illness has become severe and at times life-threatening. Research has shown that the earlier a person receives treatment, the quicker they are likely to recover. The Sheffield-based charity is seeking to recruit additional volunteers to assist in providing help during the early stages of onset of eating disorder. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield specialists advise on healthcare in Ethiopia

Six specialists from Sheffield Health Action Resource for Ethiopia (SHARE) visited St Paul’s Hospital, Addis Ababa and Ayder Referral Hospital, Mekelle to help improve Ethiopian health services. SHARE is an international health link between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Mekelle, Ethiopia, operating with charitable objectives. Loan shark suspect arrested in Shiregreen

A 44 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of illegal money lending and money laundering following a joint operation involving trading standards officials and South Yorkshire Police. The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) working with Sheffield City Council’s Trading Standards Department and South Yorkshire Police executed a warrant at a property in Shiregreen, seizing documentation. Police launch crime crackdown in Sheffield

South Yorkshire Police have been carrying out an intensive crime sweep, part of Operation Duxford, targeting Sheffield estates and involving hundreds of officers. The dedicated operation in areas including Darnall, Parson Cross, Arbourthorne, Page Hall and Burngreave has included planned visits and intelligence led warrants to tackle crime and to support vulnerable people. Kell Brook set to defend welterweight title

Kell Brook is set to defend his IBF Welterweight world title against undefeated American boxer Errol Spence, with the fight set to take place in Sheffield at Bramall Lane on 27 May. Brook’s last fight was against middleweight Gennady Golovkin where he lost in the fifth round after moving up two divisions. Spence turned professional after losing in the quarter finals in the London Olympics 2012. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Millennium Gallery hosts Robot Con return

Robot Con, the annual creative arts convention for illustrators, cartoonists and graphic novelists returned to Sheffield for its second year. The event, held at the Millenium Gallery, included workshops, discussions, exhibition, sales of rare prints and the opportunity to catch up with industry colleagues. Tapton School to be northern hub for science charity IRIS

The Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) has announced that Tapton School, Sheffield will become their new northern hub. IRIS is a charity which aims to inspire young people’s interest in science and to promote the development of science teachers. School students gain access to top level scientific data and the opportunity to collaborate in real time with scientists around the globe and to develop innovative experimental ideas. Tapton student Miles Soloman made headlines recently when he found an error in NASA data. The school will work with other Sheffield primary schools to help develop their science programmes and to provide opportunities for budding scientists. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Students’ Union voted number one

The University of Sheffield students’ union has been ranked number one in the country by the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2017. It is the ninth year it has maintained the top rating. The university was also ranked third nationally for student experience.
