Tinsley art project re-imagines industrial past

Following the unveiling of plans for the region’s largest ever public art project, Sheffield Live! spoke to artist Alex Chinneck about the ideas and inspirations behind the planned sculpture trail. The £450,000 Onwards and Upwards project funded by E.ON, will use 100,000 bricks and features five chimneys. Two form an arch across the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, one appears to float in mid-air, another is tied in a knot and a fifth appears cracked and illuminated from within. Waterside festival launches at Victoria Quays

The Waterside Festival has launched at Victoria Quays with a day of water based activities at the Sheffield canal basin. The festival, organised by the Canal and Rivers Trust, includes kayak sessions and introductory guides to fishing. For the second day it will move on to Kelham Island and the River Don. Thanks for everything on Good News Friday

Sheffield researchers claim expressing gratitude can bring benefits for health, empathy, self-esteem, reduced aggression and better sleep.  Dr Chris Blackmore and Dr Fusida Siros from the University of Sheffield are behind the idea of Good News Friday, encouraging the public to declare their thanks for something, whether big, small, personal or universal. A Wall of Gratitude has been set up in the Moor to collect declarations from the public. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Nine million drivers still use mobile phones at the wheel

A new report by the RAC suggests nine million drivers are using their mobile phones illegally whilst driving a vehicle. The report released reveals the number has fallen by a quarter compare to last year, but many are still texting or answering their phones despite tougher penalties being introduced during the year. Pop-up art exhibition in Arundel Gate underpass

A pop-up art exhibition has been on display at the Arundel Gate underpass  giving passers by the chance to view work by talented local artists and to put in a bid by silent auction. Money raised will be donated to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as part of the programme of events sponsored by IKEA in the run up to the launch of their new Sheffield store. Devastating earthquake hits Mexico City

Over 200 people have been reported dead with the number expected to increase after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Mexican states of Puebla, Morelos and Greater Mexico City. The tremor is the deadliest to hit the country in over 30 years, striking at around 1pm local time, just hours after an anniversary event to mark the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Jozra Garrido, a PhD student from Mexico City studying at the University of Sheffield. Donations in support of those affected can be made to the Red Cross and to local search and rescue organisation Topos, which was formed after the 1985 earthquake.

Allen key peregrine on display

An unusual sculpture of a peregrine falcon created with Allen keys is display outside Sheffield’s train station as part of IKEA’s Wonderful Everyday tour of Sheffield.  The sculpture was designed by local artist Jason Heppenstall who is known for his animal designs made of reclaimed materials. It is part of a series of events to mark the launch of the company’s new store in Tinsley. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Council plans Attercliffe area development

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment, has spoken to Sheffield Live! about ambitions to develop the Attercliffe neighbourhood. While city centre developments are proceeding at a pace, the Attercliffe area, which includes the listed Adelphi building, has seen little recent investment. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
