A new park and ride facility has been unveiled in Tinsley at IKEA Sheffield. The development was one of the conditions of planning approval for the furniture store and brings a total of eight park and ride facilities now available across the city. A youth football club in Burngreave has been granted funding to help tackle extremism and keep young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour. The Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire has awarded £4,500 to Aden Steelers Football Club from his Community Grants Scheme. Taxi drivers across Sheffield have been invited to take part in health checks this week at the Pakistan Muslim Centre to improve their health and well-being. The health awareness event was to encourage cab drivers to have regular health checks including blood pressure and heart rate to help facilitate early intervention if necessary. The event was organised by the Sheffield Taxi Trade Association and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust.
New research, released by insurance company Direct Line, reveals that one in five pedestrians have experienced near misses at zebra crossings and most have felt nervous at some point when using them. Since their introduction in the 60s car use has increased from around two million cars on the road to 31.7 million currently registered. A new dockless bike sharing scheme has been launched in Sheffield with a fleet of 1000 bright yellow bicycles which can be unlocked with a downloadable app. Ofo, the company behind the bike sharing service chose Sheffield as its first in the north of England. 5 Star Wrestling and FreeSports TV channel have announced a broadcast deal that will see the return of weekly free-to-view live wrestling on TV including from Sheffield’s Fly DSA Arena. The deal was announced at the Arena which will also host one of the first events in the series on 15 February. Jos Luhukay has been officially unveiled as the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday with the challenge of returning the team to top flight football. The Dutchman, who has spent most of his managing career in the lower leagues in Germany, arrived at Hillsborough after Carlos Carvalhal left the club by mutual agreement on Christmas Eve. Owls chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, has asked the new manager to “finish the job” by getting the club back into the Premier league. An Iraqi student in Sheffield has spoken of the distress he faced whilst he was detained by the Home Office at Morton Hall detention centre. Ahmed Sedeeq, an atheist who came to the UK in 2011, told Sheffield Live! “detention is not a picnic” and living an uncertain life is distressing. Ahmed was detained and threatened with deportation by UK border officers on 18 December 2017 but released a week later after more than 11,000 signed a petition asking the Home Office and The University of Sheffield to let him continue his studies.
