A shortlist of eight sites for a potential HS2 parkway station to serve South Yorkshire has been revealed including a potential park-and-ride facility with 1700 parking spaces. The eight sites, revealed at a Doncaster Council meeting, include three sites in Rotherham, at Bramley, Hooton Roberts and Wales, three sites in Doncaster, at Clayton, Mexborough and Hickleton, and two sites in Wakefield, at Fitzwilliam and Hemsworth. The new high-speed rail network is planned to run from London to Birmingham, with branches onward to Manchester and Leeds. Government ministers say it will improve the transport network and boost the economy, but there has been controversy about the route of the line and its effect on those living nearby. Opponents living in some of the rural locations affected have said it is unlikely to benefit Yorkshire. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield based charity Roundabout are celebrating 40 years of helping vulnerable young people at risk of homelessness in Sheffield with an anniversary fundraising campaign. The registered charity is asking supporters to donate forty pounds each to contribute towards their annual fundraising target of two hundred thousand pounds. Sheffield Live! reporter Sham Powell spoke to Tracey Jackson, deputy chief executive.
The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch takes place in the first half of the spring term and pupils from St Theresa’s Primary School, Prince of Wales Road have been getting involved. The Big Schools’ Birdwatch is an annual educational activity which encourages children to discover the wildlife to be found in their school grounds and to get closer to nature. Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield has been out on the streets campaigning and meeting with residents in Manor Park and Highfield as part of a day of action on the crisis in the NHS. The Labour MP, a fierce critic of Government health policies, has accused Prime Minister Theresa May of cynical disregard of the crisis in mental health services for young people. Protesters built a cardboard wall in Sheffield city centre as part of a demonstration against the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States. Boxes were lined up in front of speakers outside Sheffield Town Hall to symbolise Trump’s plan for a border wall with Mexico. The gathering, organised by people and groups including Sheffield Stop the War Coalition, Stand Up To Racism and Black Lives Matter, was one of many similar protests across the world as the presidential inauguration got underway. Lamin Ceesay, a Gambian resident in Sheffield, has spoken to Sheffield Live! about ex-pat fears for the country’s future as the post-election stand-off continues in the former British colony in West Africa. Adama Barrow, the man who won the election in The Gambia in December has been sworn in as the new president. He took the oath of office at his country’s embassy in neighbouring Senegal, ordering Gambian soldiers to remain in their barracks. Meanwhile, Gambian strongman Yahya Jammeh, President of the country since 1994, has refused to step down as his term in office expires. Troops are reported to be on stand-by to remove him by force. Sean Munnelly, a Burngreave man who came close to suicide after suffering from depression and anxiety, has spoken of the value of the neighbourhood cafés project run by Sheffield Mind and community partners. Munnelly, who lost his house and job after a relationship breakdown but has since recovered, is encouraging people who are feeling low or isolated to visit one of the three Springboard cafés. The drop-in centres run at Manor Library, St Mary’s Community Centre and the Learning Zone in Parsons Cross, providing a place to meet and talk with others and offering confidential support to help on the road to recovery. There is also a women-only Springboard café in Burngreave. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Sean Munnelly about his experience.
