Fine weather brought huge crowds to the annual Stannington Carnival, a community-led celebration which has been a summer fixture for over 20 years. With music including Stannington Mixed Choir, Stannington Brass Band and the Old Friends Folk Bank, the traditional village carnival provided a diversity of family entertainment from the Scrufts Fun Dog Show to street dance performance, archery and face painting. The 2017 British Bouldering Championships, at Devonshire Green, was the showpiece of the Cliffhanger Festival, celebrating adventure sports and outdoor pursuits. Sheffield city centre was transformed into a giant playground with activities including mountain biking, skateboarding and orienteering. Hundreds of people came to watch the return to Sheffield of the British Bouldering Championships with the best climbers from around the UK competing to see who can scale the set piece walls. Comedy Central has brought its FriendsFest tribute event to Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park where fans of the hit US sitcom can sit on Monica’s orange sofa and drink from Central Perk mugs. It is over thirteen years since Friends finished its hugely successful run on TV screens around the world but for Sheffield fans of Ross, Rachel, Chandler and the rest of the gang, FriendsFest offered a trip down memory lane. Attercliffe based community radio station, Iman FM, has been suspended from broadcasting after being found in serious breach of the Broadcasting Code by communications regulator, Ofcom. A spokesperson for Ofcom said the station was in breach for “broadcasting material likely to incite or encourage the commission of crime, or to lead to disorder”. Health workers are celebrating 69 years of the NHS with a campaign to highlight health service achievements and the challenges of underfunding. Sheffield Council has launched a public consultation on the benefits of introducing by-laws to prevent vehicle idling while waiting to pick up passengers. The move follows new guidance from health experts at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence which suggest a ‘no vehicle idling’ law would help protect people from harmful effects of air pollution. The creation and enforcement of by-laws to prevent vehicle idling could apply to cars waiting outside schools, hospitals, care homes and other locations in the city where air pollution could be significantly reduced. Dozens of people joined a protest outside the Town Hall as part of the campaign to halt the felling of trees by Sheffield Council and contractor Amey. The protest follows a threat of legal injunction sent last week to 17 people, including Green Party councillor Alison Teal, which seeks to prevent action to disrupt Amey from carrying out their work. Maintenance teams and contractors have begun to remove cladding on the Hanover Tower in Broomhall after cladding on the building failed government fire safety tests. According to Sheffield Council the work will take weeks to complete but they have told residents it is safe to live in their homes while the work is being carried out. The new fire tests were conducted after the Grenfell Tower tragedy which left at least 80 people dead and many others missing and presumed dead. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
