Next week marks 20 years since the release of The Full Monty, the low budget film set in Sheffield about former steelworkers who decided to put on a male strip show. The film went on to make millions at the international box office and created stars of many of the cast members including Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed visited the site of one of the iconic Full Monty scenes where he met with members of the Unite the union Brass Band who featured in the film.
The Quidditch Premier League (QPL) will be holding its championship final at Craven Park Stadium in Hull, on Saturday 26 August, in the climax of the QPL inaugural season. Many Sheffield players will be taking part representing the Yorkshire Roses, one of eight teams participating. Quidditch started as a fictional game from the Harry Potter books but has become a genuine sport in its own right, including broomsticks, but without the flying and other magical elements. A new smartphone app developed by the University of Sheffield and the University of Derby is helping residents determine how city living affects our health and well being. ‘Shmapped’ invites users to record good things they see around them, and the information provided will be used by town planners to design better spaces in the future. It may also help people better enjoy their surroundings. Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust are using the app to engage communities throughout the summer in free guided walks around Sheffield’s parks, nature reserves and canals. Sheffield tree campaigners were out in force on Wednesday at a peaceful early morning picket of contractors Amey at their Olive Grove depot. The action follows the coming into force of a High Court injunction which prevents tree protesters from standing within safety barriers of trees scheduled for felling. Burngreave community organisations, residents and businesses organised a festival to celebrate the diversity of the neighbourhood and what it has to offer. The “community unity” event came together in response to recent outbreaks of violent crime that have impacted on community life. The Sheffield Council injunction to prevent direct action by Sheffield tree protesters comes into force on Wednesday following the recent court decision. Campaigners trying to stop the felling of Sheffield trees have announced they will not appeal against the injunction. Sheffield Carnival is set to return for the first time since the 1980s with a colourful parade which will take place at the Norfolk Heritage Park. The carnival, with costumes, music, food and cultural activities will run alongside Sheffield Fayre as a free, family friendly event. A five day bin strike in Doncaster has been called off by members of the Unite union after a new offer on pay and jobs was agreed with private contractor Suez. Union members had threatened to stage a series of walkouts but now say the pay dispute has been resolved after a revised offer was accepted unanimously. A week long festival of activities for young people has been launched in Parson’s Cross with the support of Sheffield Council and local community partners. Summerfest offers music, games, sports, a pop cinema, tech workshops and craft activities and is taking place at Chaucer School and The Learning Zone. Steps Rehabilitation, which helps people to recover from brain or spinal injuries and complex trauma, has secured a £250,000 loan from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund. The cash will help the company grow its services as a national centre of excellence for people recovering from serious illness and accidents.
