Caborn to stand for mayor of Sheffield City Region

Former Sheffield MP, Richard Caborn, has announced his bid for selection by the Labour Party as their candidate for the mayoral position for the Sheffield City Region. The former sports minister is the first to formally announce his intention to stand. Sheffield Councillor Ben Curran also announced his candidacy before the Thursday deadline. Richard Caborn spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.

Robbed shop owner thanks community and police for support

A news agent in Sheffield who was attacked with a gun in his shop has thanked the police and the public for their support. Sajjad Ahmed Chaudhry, who owns the National News shop in Sharrow was left with bruises and a black eye when masked raiders burst into his shop. Mr Chaudhry wrestled the gun from his attackers and was badly bruised during the ordeal. It is he fifth time he’s been attacked since 1997. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

 

Meadowhall aims to raise £150k for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Meadowhall has selected Yorkshire Air Ambulance as their chosen charity for 2018/19 and aims to raise £150k in the next two years. The life saving charity maintains and operates two helicopters with full medical crews covering the Yorkshire region. The YAA said it costs around £12,000 a day to run a single helcopter. The charity replaces the Bluebell Wood Childen’s Centre, which received £128,000 from the centre in the last two years.

Deaf people facing barriers accessing health and social care in Sheffield

A report by Healthwatch Sheffield has found that people who are deaf or hard of hearing face multiple barriers leading to discrimination in accessing health or social care services.  The Not Equal report, based on consultations with 75 Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing people indicated that many had experienced a poor level of service in places like hospitals and surgeries due to a lack of communications support. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Margaret Kilner, chief officer for Healthwatch Sheffield.

UKIP councillor urges party leader to resign

Councillor for West Ecclesfield and UKIP party member, John Booker, has called on his party’s leader Henry Bolton to step down, telling Sheffield Live! that Bolton’s position “is untenable”. On Monday, a dozen senior UKIP members quit their roles, including Bolton’s deputy and assistant deputy over offensive texts sent by his ex-girlfriend. Bolton has insisted he will not quit as leader. Bumpy start to bike share scheme

Just two weeks since the launch of Ofo bikes in Sheffield, the company says the cycle-sharing scheme is proving to be very popular across the city despite reports of some of the bikes being damaged and abandoned. Last week police in Sheffield said they will no longer collect the city’s new dockless hire cycles that have been dumped and vandalised. Manor and Arbourthorne Neighbourhood Police Team wrote on their Facebook page “Bike shepherding isn’t in our job description”. Adam Rose, operations manager for Ofo Sheffield, told Sheffield Live! it was an isolated incident and the company’s ground team are there to collect and repair any damaged bikes. Dozens rally to save Niche Nightclub

More than fifty people march through Sheffield city centre on Saturday in a bid to save Niche Nightclub on Walker Street whose licence is under review following a stabbing incident. The rally began peacefully outside the club and proceed to the Town Hall and then to Snig Hill police station. The club was issued with a 48-hour closure notice after five men were injured on 23 December, four of them with stab wounds. Sheffield Council will meet on Thursday to decide the faith of the club. Kell Brook returns to the ring
