Older women hit the town

Images of older Sheffield women were projected on to icon buildings like the Town Hall and City Hall as part of a project looking at how older women are portrayed in the media.  The project is run by Dr Lorna Warren aims to highlight that 25% of Sheffields’ population are women over the age of 50 yet they are hardly ever seen in the media.

Tech North is launched

Nick Clegg, MP for Hallam, launched Tech North in Sheffield this week.  Over 200,000 people are working in the creative and technical industries in the North.  The scheme aims to see this number doubled.

Radiographers ask for fair pay

Radiographers went on strike for the first time in over 30 years.  The half day strike is the latest in a number of stoppages by NHS workers to get a one percent pay rise this year.  NHS workers have only had one increase in the last 5 years.

First digital autopsy unit

Sheffield is the first place to have a dedicated forensic autopsy unit in the UK.  The flagship service enables postmortems to be carried out with the use of a mouse instead of a knife.  At the present time there is an additional cost attached to this service.

Silicon Valley of Sports revealed

Plans for Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Park have been unveiled.  Richard Caborn, former MP for Sheffield Central, revealed plans for Sheffield’s “Silicon Valley of Sports”.  The Olympic Legacy Park is going to be built on the Don Valley Stadium site and will cost around 50 million pounds to build. The park will provide permanent home grounds  for the Sheffield Sharks and The Sheffield Eagles.
