Sheffield College Students Union elected its new officers for 2016/17 with more candidates standing than ever before. The Union, which was relaunched in 2012, confirmed the election of eleven officers whose roles include student support and representation on the College’s governing body. Sheffield’s public health unit is getting behind the national HIV Awareness Week to raise awareness of the disease and the benefits of getting tested. The week long campaign which runs up to 1st December, World AIDS Day will highlight the impact of HIV on people’s lives and promote access to the screening tests available. Green party co-leader Jonathan Bartley joined anti-austerity campaigners at a rally outside Sheffield Town Hall to condemn the autumn budget statement. Meanwhile Labour have said the government was “unprepared and ill-equipped” for Brexit. In the first financial statement since the Brexit vote in July, Chancellor Philip Hammond said government borrowing will increase by £122 billion over the next six years while UK growth predictions have been severely cut. Hammond vowed to ensure the UK economy was “resilient” and unveiled a fuel duty freeze and more cash for housing, transport and digital infrastructure. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Blades manager Chris Wilder expects Paul Coutts, Kieron Freeman and Mark Duffy to be available for Tuesday’s game against Bury despite weekend injuries. Goals from Billy Sharp and Stefan Scougall gave Sheffield United a 2-1 victory over nine-man Shrewsbury that lifted them into the automatic promotion places this weekend. However the game was marred for United with injuries to three key players. Paul Coutts, Kieron Freeman and Mark Duffy all had to leave the field with injuries. Families gathered in the Peace Gardens as water cascades, lights and nearby buildings turned purple to mark World Prematurity Day. The Sheffield Hospitals Charity and staff from the Neonatal Unit organised the awareness raising event to highlight the challenges of pre-term birth. It is estimated that one in ten babies are born prematurely worldwide and that premature birth is the leading cause of death in infants under five. Around 700 premature and sick babies are admitted annually to the Jessop Wing’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the number continues to increase. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are encouraging patients with minor illnesses to make more use of community pharmacists as part of a week long self care campaign. Sheffield CCG are advising patients to seek out the expert advice and treatment on offer at their local pharmacy for common illnesses such as aches and pains, colds and flu, itchy skin conditions and simple eye infections. Sheffield’s annual Children’s Book Awards were announced today, with the overall winner, Michael Rosen, and other authors present at The Crucible for the ceremony and signings. The Sheffield Children’s Book Awards bring together schools across Sheffield to enable children to vote on their favourite books. Skywatchers in Sheffield have been enjoying a ‘supermoon’ sighting as the Earth’s satellite makes its closest approach since 1948. The supermoon was at its brightest on Monday night when, for observers, it appeared about seven per cent larger and fifteen per cent brighter than normal.
