Weekender athletes pay tribute to women of steel

Women athletes taking part in the Outdoor City Weekender gathered today at Sheffield’s iconic women of steel sculpture to pay tribute to the women who worked in Sheffield’s steelworkers during the two world wars. The outdoor activities festival runs from Friday through Sunday and includes climbing, bike riding and and a film festival. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to cyclist Hannak Johnson.

Police chief asked to explain response to tree row

Liberal Democrat peer, Paul Scriven, is demanding South Yorkshire Police explain the deployment of dozens of police officers on Abbeydale Park Rise on Monday, when a row began between tree campaigners and council contractor Amey. Sheffield Live! reporter, Baillor Jalloh, spoke to Lord Scriven.

Doodling draws a crowd for charity fundraiser

A new creative art and fundraising event Funk ‘n’ Doodle, hosted at The Albion pub on London Road, has raised over £7,000 for Mind, the mental health charity. The event, bringing people together to destress by doodling and dancing to a funky soundtrack of up and coming Sheffield DJ’s, is the debut promotion of Fellevents, a student-led arts collective. National campaign highlights apprenticeship opportunities

Sheffield College expects to place around ninety 16 to 24 year olds into apprenticeship vacancies as part of the National Apprenticeship Week campaign. The week long promotion highlights the benefits of apprenticeships for the young people involved as well as for the employer and wider community. Countdown to Brook v. Rabchenko

Sheffield boxer Kell Brook is set to goes head to head against Sergey Rabchenko with an attempt to reignite his career in a bout for the WBC Silver title at the FlyDSA Arena. Brook lost his IBF welterweight title to american Errol Spence last year and said he fell out of love with the sport but is now seeking to make a comeback. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Heavy snow blamed for disruption

The Siberian cold blast, dubbed the Beast from the East, has led to many school closing and caused widespread travel disruption. More than 550 schools across Yorkshire closed on Wednesday as a result of the wintry conditions. An amber weather warning still remains in place across the country. In South Yorkshire, some roads were also closed due to heavy snow fall. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to drivers on South Street in Park Hilll.

Hundreds join rally in support of university staff

Hundreds joined a rally from the University of Sheffield to Barker’s Pool in support of university staff on strike in a row over proposed changes to their pension scheme. Lecturers, represented in the dispute by the University and College Union, say the changes could leave them thousands of pounds out of pocket. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Gritting lorries out to keep Sheffield moving

With cold temperatures and snow arriving from Siberia, gritting lorries have been out in force to prepare for the expected impact on roads and traffic. The met office have predicted the weather will worsen over the course of the week and police have asked people to make journeys only where necessary. Uber gives drivers 3 weeks to obtain local licence to operate

Uber drivers have converged on the company’s office in Sheffield following news that private hire licences acquired in other locations will no longer be transferrable. Previously the company allowed an Uber driver to acquire a licence in one region and to operate in another. Now they have been given just three weeks to acquire a licence locally. Former refugee launches humanitarian charity

A former Liberian refugee, who came to Sheffield in 2004, has launched a charity organisation to support children in the UK and West Africa. The Akoi Massayan Bazzie – Give Hope Humanitarian Foundation (AMBG2H) aims to deliver humanitarian hope packages to support young people, families and communities affected by wars and natural disasters through public institutions such as medical centres, schools, orphanages, youth centres and prisons.
