Sheffield charity, Music in the Round, have commissioned a concert and storytelling performance for children featuring a music-loving dog and cat. Stan and Mabel and the Race for Space is an illustrated story with original music by children’s composer in residence, Paul Rissmann. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Music in the Round executive director Deborah Chadbourn.
Sheffield Carnival is set to return for the first time since the 1980s with a colourful parade which will take place at the Norfolk Heritage Park. The carnival, with costumes, music, food and cultural activities will run alongside Sheffield Fayre as a free, family friendly event. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed joined the preparations at Weston Park Museum.
It’s rare that you can leave a gig feeling that you have, in a strange way, made friends with the band after they’ve left the stage, despite not having a conversation with them. The four piece is made up of (in alphabetical order!) Becky Blomfield, Billy Hutton, Chris Webb and Oli Holbrook and each soul on stage emanated this wonderful feeling of positivity, and through their themes of Being Nice and Owning Your Okayness, it’s almost as if you are getting a lyrically hug from the band and feel that you are in an environment where you can let your guard down and just be yourself.
Despite some technical difficulties, Milk Teeth held the crowd by being completely endearing and radiating positive energy in the light of something that could have caused other bands to “get the face on”. A few jokes from the drummer Oli Holbrook sent ripples of chortles and I think perhaps some non-malicious eye rolling through the crowd.
The show was just brilliant and it left us at The Plug dying for more, I think it’s fair to say that we were surprised when the band left the stage and the lights came on! More Milk Teeth would have been the only thing that would have improved a practically perfect performance.
The group absolutely ooze the potential to be something massive and I have the utmost confidence that they will be.
Becky Blomfield is absolute power house, and a great role model for both men and women. Her incredibly interesting article Interesting article HERE from back in 2016 just shows that there is still a lot of work to do in the music industry.

The Peace in the Park festival returned to Sheffield for 2017 with the message of reclaiming peace in the world and the power of community action. Award-winning Sheffield songwriter and producer Eliot Kennedy and singer Joanne Heseldon Edwards released the album in support of the Help for Heroes charity. Record Collector music shop in Broomhill was among 200 independent record stores across the UK celebrating the tenth annual Record Store Day. Exclusive vinyl releases produced for the day included rare David Bowie and Smiths recordings and many participating shops and cities also hosted artist performances and events to mark the occasion. The celebration of independent record stores has become a global event in the music calendar. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield social enterprise, Under The Stars, are celebrating a new generation of DJ talent. Newly trained DJs will be demonstrating their skills alongside other artists and music acts, including Sheffield legend DJ Pipes, as part of a collaboration with ‘Party for the People’. Under the stars is a social enterprise run by and for people with a learning disability and their friends.
Pianist Bill Skipworth performed a fundraising concert at Sheffield Cathedral to raise money for the Sheffield branch of the Royal Society for the Blind. The performance was particularly poignant as Bill himself has suffered significant sight loss in the last six months. Despite the challenges he was keen to go ahead with the event to raise money for a cause close to his heart. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Bill at the rehearsals.
