Dozens of people joined a protest outside the Town Hall as part of the campaign to halt the felling of trees by Sheffield Council and contractor Amey. The protest follows a threat of legal injunction sent last week to 17 people, including Green Party councillor Alison Teal, which seeks to prevent action to disrupt Amey from carrying out their work. A new mobility scheme has been launched at the Moor Market that promises to make it easier for people with disability to get around the city centre. The scheme, called Mobile Sheffield, is funded by Sheffield’s Business Improvement District and Sheffield Council and includes a hire service for equipment such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames. The Sheffield-based social enterprise and learning hub works with creative designers and ethically made textiles to support access to the fashion industry. Founded by Olusola McKenzie in 2010, the group brings together experienced practitioners with individuals at an early stage in their career to provide training and enterprise support with ethical and environmental credentials. Sheffield Council have signposted seven new locations for running in the city’s parks and green spaces as part of the second phase of their Run Routes initiative. The Space for Cycling campaign bike ride took place at the weekend to promote cycle routes and cycle-friendly transport planning. Coordinated by Cycling UK, the family-oriented cycle event set off from Devonshire Green with hundreds of cyclists joining the Big Ride. Space for Cycling is a national campaign calling for investment in a network of cycle routes accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Local group Cycle Sheffield have called for Sheffield City Council to include cycling as a part of the transport infrastructure. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
The inaugural Sheffield LGBT+ awards will take place over Easter weekend at the Library Theatre. The awards ceremony was started Sheffield PRIDE to reward and recognise those who have worked to promote LGBT+ causes. Gleadless Valley is to receive a government grant of £510,000 to improve local amenities and housing stock on the 1950s estate. The regeneration plan for the area is to be developed in consultation with local residents, community groups and other partners. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
The ‘Let’s Talk about Sex’ festival features musical, film screenings, discussions and cabaret, with the public invited to join the conversation. Theatre Delicatessen promises a fun and safe environment in which embarrassment can be put to one side and everyone will be talking about sex. Charges against nine campaigners, including a Green Party councillor, arrested over a tree-felling protest have been dropped. Alison Teal, councillor for Nether-Edge and Sharrow, was with six others arrested on suspicion of preventing workmen from chopping down a tree on Chippinghouse Road on 6 February. The protestors were arrested under Section 241 of the Trade Union amd :Labour Relations Act 1982 and charged with preventing lawful work. The charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service who said there was “insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction”. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
To celebrate World Book Day 2017, children from Concord Junior School came face-to-face with Oona the Elephant at Meadowhall shopping centre. Oona is the main character in Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild which runs at the Lyceum Theatre later this month. It is the story of a boy who is saved from a tsunami by the elephant and who then has to survive in the jungle. The life sized elephant puppet is operated by four actors who took her on a stroll through the shopping centre before meeting the school children. The encounter is part of an ongoing partnership between Meadowhall and Sheffield Theatres to bring theatre and cultural education to children in the S9 neighbourhood.
