Council seeks new tree campaign prosecutions

Sheffield Council are seeking fresh prosecutions of tree campaigners for allegedly breaching a recent injunction relating to tree felling. Simon Crump from Myrtle Road and others were handed the legal notices today after crossing safety barriers on Meersbrook Park Road set up by council contractors undertaking tree felling works. The court injunction was issued in August to eighteen people including Councillor Alison Teal after they previously crossed safety barriers in a bid to stop the felling of trees. Burton Street celebrates community business success

Burton Street Foundation is one of hundreds of community businesses opening their doors to the public to celebrate Community Business Weekend. The Hillsborough-based organisation works with people of all ages and abilities and provides facilities for learning, play and social activities. Tinsley art project re-imagines industrial past

Following the unveiling of plans for the region’s largest ever public art project, Sheffield Live! spoke to artist Alex Chinneck about the ideas and inspirations behind the planned sculpture trail. The £450,000 Onwards and Upwards project funded by E.ON, will use 100,000 bricks and features five chimneys. Two form an arch across the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, one appears to float in mid-air, another is tied in a knot and a fifth appears cracked and illuminated from within. Thanks for everything on Good News Friday

Sheffield researchers claim expressing gratitude can bring benefits for health, empathy, self-esteem, reduced aggression and better sleep.  Dr Chris Blackmore and Dr Fusida Siros from the University of Sheffield are behind the idea of Good News Friday, encouraging the public to declare their thanks for something, whether big, small, personal or universal. A Wall of Gratitude has been set up in the Moor to collect declarations from the public. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Hundreds enjoy bank holiday weekend at Oktoberfest

Hundreds of people have been enjoying the August bank holiday weekend at Sheffield’s Oktoberfest on Devonshire Green. Council injunction on tree protestors comes in to force

The Sheffield Council injunction to prevent direct action by Sheffield tree protesters comes into force on Wednesday following the recent court decision. Campaigners trying to stop the felling of Sheffield trees have announced they will not appeal against the injunction. Protestors standing inside safety zones erected around the trees will risk immediate arrest. Sheffield Live!! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Green Party councillors Alison Teale and Douglas Johnson.

Rotherham youth worker in running for national award

Nicola Harding, who works at Rotherham’s Myplace performance youth and arts centre, has been shortlisted for the title Young Worker of The Year in the Youth Matters Awards 2017. Harding joins a shortlist with four other young workers from across the country, each of whom have shown outstanding commitment to supporting young people. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

First LGBT wedding photographer opens in Sheffield

A former Sheffield Hallam University student has become the first dedicated LGBT wedding photographer with the launch of her same sex weddings business. Nelly Naylor opened her business after she struggled to find an LGBT photographer for her wedding following the proposal of her girlfriend. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Improvements underway at Sheffield’s largest park

Woodseats Playground has been re-opened with a ribbon-cutting launch event as part of a £300k programme of improvements at Graves Park. Sheffield’s largest park, nearly a century old, is home to a large lake, sports pitches, a rose garden, play areas, an animal farm and even its own herd of Highland cattle. The programme has been part funded by the sale of Cobnar Cottage. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Darnall schools hold community sports day

Primary and secondary schools in Darnall came together for an annual sports day at the City Athletics Stadium on Woodburn Road. The community event, open to parents and children, aimed to promote children’s engagement in sport and exercise.
