A five day bin strike in Doncaster has been called off by members of the Unite union after a new offer on pay and jobs was agreed with private contractor Suez. Union members had threatened to stage a series of walkouts but now say the pay dispute has been resolved after a revised offer was accepted unanimously. Steps Rehabilitation, which helps people to recover from brain or spinal injuries and complex trauma, has secured a £250,000 loan from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund. The cash will help the company grow its services as a national centre of excellence for people recovering from serious illness and accidents. The Sheffield-based Children’s Food Trust charity, which promotes healthy eating for children, is set to close by the end of September after failing to secure new funding. The organisation, launched ten years ago, employs 47 people including 31 from Sheffield, all expected to lose their jobs. The Sheffield Dementia Alliance, responded to a new report by the Lancett Commission, is advising on lifestyle changes that can prevent the incidence of dementia. According to scientists around one third of dementia cases are preventable through improved life choices including continuing education, exercise and addressing middle-aged obesity, high blood pressure and hearing loss. It is estimated that 1.2 million people in England and Wales will be living with dementia by 2040, a 57% increase from 2016 figures largely driven by people living longer. Campaigners have welcome Sheffield Council’s decision to suspend a temporary injunction preventing protestors taking direct action to stop tree felling. A hearing was held in Leeds on Monday with the council seeking a high court injunction to prevent protesters in Sheffield from campaigning at locations where contractors are at work. The injunction will now be suspended pending a full three day civil trial scheduled for 26-28 July. In the meantime no further letters threatening injunction are to be sent out to tree protestors. Primary and secondary schools in Darnall came together for an annual sports day at the City Athletics Stadium on Woodburn Road. The community event, open to parents and children, aimed to promote children’s engagement in sport and exercise. Sheffield Council has launched a public consultation on the benefits of introducing by-laws to prevent vehicle idling while waiting to pick up passengers. The move follows new guidance from health experts at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence which suggest a ‘no vehicle idling’ law would help protect people from harmful effects of air pollution. The creation and enforcement of by-laws to prevent vehicle idling could apply to cars waiting outside schools, hospitals, care homes and other locations in the city where air pollution could be significantly reduced. Dozens of people joined a protest outside the Town Hall as part of the campaign to halt the felling of trees by Sheffield Council and contractor Amey. The protest follows a threat of legal injunction sent last week to 17 people, including Green Party councillor Alison Teal, which seeks to prevent action to disrupt Amey from carrying out their work.
