Extreme sports centre gets go ahead at former ski village

Sheffield’s ski village and surrounding area is set to be brought back to life as a ramped up Extreme branded sports, leisure and entertainment destination, Sheffield Council has confirmed. The Parkwood area is to be transformed with the prospect of bringing thousands of visitors and hundreds of jobs to the city as part of a £22.5m development across the 28 acre site that will include new mountain bike tracks and the re-instatement of Sheffield’s much-loved ski slopes. Radio show launches record label

A popular weekly radio show on Sheffield Live community radio has led to the setting up of a record label and the launch of a first CD for music and comedy duo, the Glummer Twins. The Steel and Wire Show, produced by Harry Welburn, focuses on bluegrass, americana and old time folk music. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Children’s Book Awards give young readers a say

The Children’s Book Awards took place at the Crucible, the only national book award where the winning titles are voted on by children. The event, into its 29th year, was attended by authors, children, parents, teachers and librarians. Music lovers launch anti-racism campaign

Local organisers for the national Love Music Hate Racism campaign are holding an all-day fundraising event this weekend supported by Sheffield musicians and taking place at the White Lion pub in Heeley. The event aims to bring people together through music to support the anti-racism campaign and to raise funds for bigger events in the future. Waterside festival launches at Victoria Quays

The Waterside Festival has launched at Victoria Quays with a day of water based activities at the Sheffield canal basin. The festival, organised by the Canal and Rivers Trust, includes kayak sessions and introductory guides to fishing. For the second day it will move on to Kelham Island and the River Don. Nether Edge Festival kicks off with carnival

The week long Nether Edge Festival has launched with an official opening and carnival at St Peter’s Hall Common Ground on Machon Bank Road. Hundreds enjoy bank holiday weekend at Oktoberfest

Hundreds of people have been enjoying the August bank holiday weekend at Sheffield’s Oktoberfest on Devonshire Green. Sheffield Carnival returns for August bank holiday

Sheffield Carnival is set to return for the first time since the 1980s with a colourful parade which will take place at the Norfolk Heritage Park. The carnival, with costumes, music, food and cultural activities will run alongside Sheffield Fayre as a free, family friendly event.
