Sheffield holds inaugaral LGBT+ awards

The inaugural Sheffield LGBT+ awards will take place over Easter weekend at the Library Theatre. The awards ceremony was started Sheffield PRIDE to reward and recognise those who have worked to promote LGBT+ causes. Award categories including a sports prize, activist awards and an employer prize. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

New cinema, The Light, opens on The Moor

The Light, Sheffield’s newest multi-screen cinema opens on The Moor this weekend with an opening bill including the highly anticipated Fast and Furious 8. The Light plans to show the latest blockbusters plus independent and international films. The venue also includes a spacious café-bar, The Green Room. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Artwork marks 40 years of snooker in Sheffield

Local artist, Matt Cockayne, has been commissioned to produce a special artwork to celebrate 40 years of World Snooker at The Crucible. Cockayne of Goo Design has produced the limited edition print to mark the 40th anniversary of the World Snooker Championships coming to Sheffield. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Cockayne at his Chesterfield studio.

Tent City organiser welcomes progress on homelessness

Tent City organiser, Anthony Cunningham, told Sheffield Live! services for the homeless have improved since the closure of the Tent City camp at Park Hill flats. The Tent City campaign put the focus on support for rough sleepers by providing a temporary camp with food, water and amenities. Now the organisers are launching a sunday morning breakfast club for the homeless and have welcomed the cooperation and support of Sheffield Council. Sheffield students prepare for NUS elections

Sheffield student candidates are gearing up for election campaigning to the National Union of Students (NUS) Executive Committee and other positions. The national student body represents students’ interests and provides advice and support on issues such as finance and how to gain post-study employment. Police and Hallam Union tackle hate crime

South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union have teamed up to tackle hate crime in the city. Students and university staff are often reluctant to call in the police when confronted with hate crime. Hallam Union is working with the police to tackle these issues and to help police to communicate with students and staff where necessary. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Thousands of children on scout waiting list

The Scout Organisation have reported a waiting list of over 51,000 children due to a shortage of adult volunteers. Chief Scout Bear Grylls said it was a “challenge” to recruit more adult volunteers to support youngsters wanting to become Scouts, Beavers, Cubs or Explorers. Circus School offers a taste of the big top

Sheffield youngsters have been given the opportunity to hone their juggling, unicycle and trapeze skills at Greentop Circus during the Easter holiday. The Sheffield-based community circus provides young people with access to specialist training and facilities to give them an insight into circus art and life under the big top. Prince Andrew opens new manufacturing research centre

The Duke of York, with the aid of a robotic arm, has officially opened Factory 2050, a new Sheffield University manufacturing research centre. The centre uses digital technologies to enable rapid product design and flexible component manufacture to test new production methods. The launch event included talks by key figures from the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and industrial partners including the University of Sheffield and McLaren.
