Sheffield workers take to the streets

Dozens of Sheffield city workers put on their trainers at lunchtime and ventured out into the sunshine for a mid-day run. The event was organised as part of Move More Month and the Outdoor City initiative which will introduce new running routes to the city and an ambition to make Sheffield the most active city by 2020. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake put on his running shoes to check out the routes.

New hotline to help for homeless people

A new telephone hotline and text messaging service has been launched to help provide support to people sleeping rough in Sheffield. The freephone number is part of a new Street Outreach Service provided by homelessness charity and housing association Framework and backed by Sheffield Council to provide support to homeless people and those at risk of homelessness. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake earlier spoke with Sam Lloyd of Framework.

Volunteering celebrated in Rotherham Big Walk

The Big Walk is one of a series of events to celebrate thousands of people who contribute as volunteers, giving their time to do something for the community. Azz Mohammed spoke to event organiser Alison Thorp of Voluntary Action Rotherham and Chief Superintendent Rob Odell of South Yorkshire Police.

The Gruffalo appears in Sheffield Winter Garden

Much loved monster, The Gruffalo, appeared as part of National Bookstart Week to promote early years reading. The event, aimed at under 5s and their parents, was moved to the indoor location due to weather conditions. National Bookstart Week runs from 5 to 11 June. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Cancer patients in charity football tournament

A group of young Sheffield cancer patients have been taking part in a football competition for cancer awareness and fundraising. The charity event aimed to dispel the myth that enjoying life and playing sports must come to an end with a cancer diagnosis. Competitors took part in six-aside tournament, in which all teams had at least one person with cancer or having survived the illness. Sheffield church launches heritage maintenance service

St Augustines church on Brocco Bank, Sheffield is the first in the UK to benefit from an innovative church maintenance scheme supported by the National Churches Trust. The Maintenance Booker scheme offer grants towards various repair programmes for listed and unlisted churches, chapels and other historic buildings. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Hundreds join two-day Amphifest free festival

Sheffield’s open air amphitheatre in South Street Park was the location for the weekend festival of live music, food stalls and family activities. The organisers, Friends of Sheaf Valley Park, aim is to bring communities together and celebrate the diversity of the area. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Mental health charity facing closure after funding cut

Mental Health Action Group Sheffield has four months left before its doors will shut to service users unless it secures new funding. The announcement comes after a Sheffield Council decision to withdrew grant funding for the Organisation. MHAGS, established in 1992, is based in Creswick Street, Langsett and provides meeting space and support for people with mental health problems. In recent years it has received a £10,500 annual grant from the Council to help with expenditure. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
