Hillsborough remembered

Red carnations for Hillsborough

Sheffield Live presenters, staff and volunteers wearing their red carnations to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster

Sheffield Live! 93.2 fm partnered with MagHull Community Radio in North Liverpool today to remember those who were affected by the Hillsborough Disaster.

David Hughes, one of the volunteers at Maghull community radio came up with the idea to wear a red carnation as way of paying tribute to those who lost their lives on that day, twenty-five years ago today.

“It’s a personal way of showing you remember. There are lots of big events and big organisations that do things,” said David, “but this is personal. It is your own way of showing you remember.”

Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM was contacted by David to see if staff would be willing to wear a red carnation on the day. Sangita Basudev, chief executive of Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM said “This is an important time to show our solidarity with the people of Liverpool. 96 people lost their lives, 766 were physically injured on the day and countless others were affected.” Sangita added “It is important that a community radio station in Liverpool and one in Sheffield will stand together today to remember.”

Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM held a minute’s silence at 15:06 today.

“It’s me PG” interviews James Gillespie

Paul Gregory was joined in the studio during his Saturday morning “It’s me PG” show today by James Gillespie, who is appearing at The Viper Rooms tonight (12th April) in Sheffield.

Paul and James discussed James’ musical background: busking, appearing in a wide range of bands and now touring as a solo artist. Listen to the podcast of the 2nd hour of Paul’s show, containing the interview with James.

Paul comments:

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music – story telling from Folk, pain and passion from blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge.

James’ live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

After completing a very successful 25 date UK tour in Feb-March 2014, James will be returning to five of the best venues in London, Sheffield, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh, to blow the socks off his existing fans and new listeners once again.

He is already booked for 16 festivals, some along side Hudson Taylor and Toploader. He is warming up for Turin Brakes at an exclusive UK gig later this year.

James song ‘The Hills are Hers’ is being used as a soundtrack for a Redbull surf video for Jordy Smith. His new single is ‘Survive’ (both produced by Ken Nelson – Coldplay, Paulo Nutini, Gomez).

Hallé Orchestra’s Assistant Conductor, Jamie Phillips, interviewed

Jamie Phillips is the youngest person to hold the post of Assistant Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra.

He will conduct the Hallé next week for Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 ‘Pathétiqué, “one of the great swansongs in musical history. From dark beginnings, full of foreboding, it proceeds via an uneasy waltz and a far-from triumphal march to a closure of near-unbearable poignancy.”

Jamie was interviewed today by Sheffield Live! presenter Dale Le Fevre on our Communities Live programme.

Queen Mother of Taxis is star of new ad campaign

Karen Rodgerson - "Queen Mother of Taxis"

A dispatcher considered a member of the family at Mercury Taxis who always ensures Sheffielders get their taxis on time swapped the call centre for the radio studio to star in Mercury’s latest advertising campaign on Sheffield Live! 93.2FM.

Karen Rodgerson has worked in Sheffield’s taxi industry for the past 33 years working mainly for Mercury Taxis (Sheffield) Ltd for around 25 years. Karen’s name has probably been known by every taxi driver in the city at one time or another – and now the drivers get to hear her on Sheffield Live on the hour, as well as through Mercury’s despatch system.

Mercury’s latest 3-month campaign on Sheffield Live! features Karen voicing a number of destinations in her unmissable voice.

Dermot Griffiths, General Manager of Mercury Taxis, said “Taxi drivers respect and fear Karen in equal measure, but she has always made sure the people of Sheffield got their taxis on time, something that she is as passionate about today as she’s always been.

“Regarded as a member of the family by the Eales family (owners of Mercury), Karen – the Queen Mother of Taxis in Sheffield – was a natural choice to take a starring role in our latest ad campaign on Sheffield Live, thanks to her unmissable voice.”

You can listen to Mercury’s ad, featuring Karen, here.

Lee Ford

Lee Ford

Many of our listeners and readers will know that SLTV – awarded the licence to operate the new local digital TV channel for Sheffield – will work in partnership with Sheffield Live! 93.2fm, the city’s community radio.

Sheffield Live! will become the first cross platform local and community media service in the UK, available on radio, TV, web and mobile.

The local TV channel will be broadcast on Freeview (Channel 8), Virgin cable and the Internet, carrying local news, music, arts, community affairs, sports and entertainment. The channel will encourage local talent and support local media producers.

We’re delighted to announce that Sheffield Community Media, the SLTV holding company, has appointed Lee Ford, an experienced television, video and film producer, to the role of SLTV Launch Manager, a six month appointment.

Lee is Sheffield based and is a highly experienced television, video and film producer – and radio broadcaster. He’s presented shows on BBC Radio Sheffield (and BBC Radio Leeds) as well as producing and shooting programmes, films, music videos and commercials for many broadcasters and clients.

Lee commented: “It’s going to be exciting and a great pleasure to bring SLTV to launch. Sheffield is diverse city, crammed with creativity and needs a television channel that reflects how unique this city is. SLTV will finally provide our city’s folk with the television coverage they want and deserve. There are many challenges ahead but I can’t wait to our launch date.”

Steve Buckley, chair of the SLTV Ltd board, said: “SLTV will be an open, diverse and inclusive channel, locally owned, and a great opportunity for the city to showcase local talent and creativity and to build the digital and creative economy.  After much interest in the launch manager role we are delighted to have Lee in post, bringing a wealth of varied experience to take SLTV to launch.”
