Lib Dem group leader on Sheffield Council, Shaffaq Mohammed, confirmed cross party support in Sheffield for the just announced HS2 route via Sheffield’s central train station. The high speed route will offer twice hourly journeys from central Sheffield to London. The news has been broadly welcomed by businesses and the public but there are some that oppose the decision with houses set to be lost in the process. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
Campaigners have welcome Sheffield Council’s decision to suspend a temporary injunction preventing protestors taking direct action to stop tree felling. A hearing was held in Leeds on Monday with the council seeking a high court injunction to prevent protesters in Sheffield from campaigning at locations where contractors are at work. The injunction will now be suspended pending a full three day civil trial scheduled for 26-28 July. In the meantime no further letters threatening injunction are to be sent out to tree protestors. Streets Ahead contractor Amey have announced support for Age UK Sheffield as their chosen charity of the year. Staff working on the Streets Ahead city-wide highways maintenance contract that is upgrading the condition of our city’s roads, pavements, street lights, bridges and other street items will dedicate a day of their time to the charity, helping the elderly get more out of life. Government has announced that Sheffield city centre train station has been approved for connection to the high-speed rail route HS2. Police executed a number of drug warrants across the city as part of Operation Duxford to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. Thirteen people were arrested in suspicion of drug offences, theft, breach of bail and immigration offences. Baillor Jalloh spoke to chief constable Stephen Watson of South Yorkshire Police.
The English Institute of Sport played host to an end of season tournament and awards event for goalball, the only paralympic team sport designed for the visually impaired. Played with raised markings on the floor, blindfolds are used to ensure an even playing field as players locate the ball through sound. Sheffield Council have released details of their bid to bring Channel 4 to Sheffield including visualisations of a TV production headquarters next to Sheffield Station. Sheffield is one of several cities that have thrown their hat into the ring in respond to a government consultation on moving the public service channel out of London. It is estimated a Sheffield headquarters could bring over 4,000 highly skilled jobs to the city by 2027. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
Cat lovers will soon be able to walk into a coffee shop and enjoy a cuppa in the company of their furry friends. Tabby Teas cat cafe is set to open on Cemetery Road, Sharrow and aims to give a home to cats from animal rescue charities such as the Mill House Animal Sanctuary. Work has commenced on flood protection works in Falding Street, Chapeltown as part of a wider £83m project to renew and upgrade Sheffield flood defences. Several terraced homes in the area have been subjected to serious flooding in recent years, due to a large culvert watercourse beneath the railway which has been unable to cope with demand during after heavy rainfall.
