Open house at Amy’s House

Special needs charity, Amy’s House, is offering coffee mornings and specialist advice to support children with disabilities and their families. It was a full house at Amy’s House this week with advice on offer from hearing loss specialists Bloom Audiologists. Amy’s House was set up after founder Jayne Hurdicth, lost her daughter Amy to meningitis and her youngest daughter, Molly, was born with special needs. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Green councillors shortlisted for national awards

Sheffield Green Party councillors Alison Teal and Magid Magid have been shortlisted for national honours in the LGiU/CCLA Councillor Achievement Awards 2017. Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor Alison Teal was shortlisted for the Community Champion award, while Broomhill and Sharrow Vale councillor Magid Magid has been shortlisted for the Young Councillor of the Year award. Sheffield Live! Community Business Weekend Open Day

Sheffield Live! is holding an Open Day event, 12-5pm, Friday 6th October to celebrate Community Business Weekend.

The second annual Community Business Weekend organised by Power to Change will be taking place from 5th-8th October 2017. The event celebrates the 7000 community businesses across England in local hands. Sheffield Live! is proud to be a local community business and to join the celebrations we will be opening our doors to invite local people to come and see what we do and how.

Police seek witnesses following multiple stabbings

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after seven people were stabbed in separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday in Sheffield city centre. Two men have been charged in connection with altercations on Carver Street and Division Street in which five people were injured in the early hours of Saturday morning. At around 2.20am on Sunday, officers attended and secured a scene at the Area bar on Burgess Street where two men had been stabbed in what the police believe to be an unrelated incident. A closure notice has been served on the Area bar which the police are seeking to extend at the magistrates court. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Melanin Festival kicks off Black History Month

A group of volunteers have teamed up to organise various events in Sheffield under the banner of the Melanin Festival to celebrate Black History Month. The month recognises the contribution of Black and ethnic minorities in Britain to cultural, political, social and economic life. Black History Month has been celebrated in Sheffield since 1997 though its origins date back to the United States in the 1920s.

New sculpture park at Park Hill

The second phase of the Park Hill flats redevelopment has been launched with the unveiling of Sculpture Park Hill, part of a new public artspace. The first commission and the only permanent work planned for the 3.5 acre site are a series of disc-shaped concrete plinths. The Park Hill Plinths have been designed through a collaboration between artist Keith Wilson and landscape architect Tim Osborne. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Soapbox Derby thrills at Clifton Park

Visitors to Clifton Park, Rotherham enjoyed the spills, thrills and crashes of the award-winning Soap Box Derby in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The Whacky Races style event is into its second year with local teams raising money to race their home made vehicles through the park and over the speed bumps. Designs included a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, a version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Star Wars inspired vehicles. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield United: Brook selected for Wales squad

Sheffield United youngster, David Brook has been selected to join the Wales national team for the forthcoming World Cup qualifying matches in October against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland. It’s the twenty year old’s first international call up. Blades manager Chris Wilder has been full of praise for Brook and said the youngster is very much his plan for the future.

Sheffield Wednesday: Owls boss under pressure

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has said he’s not afraid of being sacked despite recent losses. The Owls boss is under pressure after loosing against city rivals Sheffield United at Hillsborough followed by a 0-1 defeat against Birmingham city on Tuesday night. Wednesday are currently fourteenth in the Championship and face another difficult task at the weekend against regional rivals Leeds United.

IKEA Sheffield store opens in Tinsley

Hundreds of customers queued up to be among the first through the door at the new IKEA Sheffield store near Meadowhall, on the site of the former Tinsley Wire firm. The Swedish home furnishing giant has created nearly 500 jobs in the region with the IKEA Sheffield store being the 20th opened in the UK. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
