The Sheffield Sharks have announced they will extend captain Mike Tuck’s contract for the 2017/18 season but with an extra twist. The 6’7″ power forward has held the role of captain for the last five years and has recently been given a marketing role with the Sharks alongside his playing career. Thousands of students across South Yorkshire have received their A-level results with Sheffield students celebrating another year of success. At Silverdale school 72 per cent of pupils got A* to B grades, an increase of 8 per cent compared to last year. A quarter of students achieved A or A* grades, and the results will help to send students to top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and many Russell Group institutions. Sierra Leoneans in Sheffield have expressed concern for their families and loved-ones after mudslides killed more than 600 people with many more missing in the capital, Freetown. The country’s president, Earnest Bai Koroma, has declared a week of mourning after Monday’s heavy rain left hundreds of people homeless and fears mount over the outbreak of diseases such as cholera and typhoid. Nicola Harding, who works at Rotherham’s Myplace performance youth and arts centre, has been shortlisted for the title Young Worker of The Year in the Youth Matters Awards 2017. Harding joins a shortlist with four other young workers from across the country, each of whom have shown outstanding commitment to supporting young people. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
A new report by the End Youth Homelessness Campaign suggests public opinion greatly underestimates the scale of youth homelessness in the UK. The findings show that most people believe there are less than 50,000 homeless young people in the UK whereas studies indicate more than 83,000. The study also revealed commonly held misconceptions, with nearly half of people citing drug or alcohol addiction as among the most common reasons for homelessness. Green Party councillor Alison Teal and Sheffield Trees Action Group (STAG) chair Dave Dilner have vowed to appeal a High Court decision preventing ‘direct action’ protests against tree felling. Teal and Dilner expressed disappointment at the ruling in Sheffield Council’s favour allowing injunctions to be granted against them, Calvin Payne and “persons unknown”. Sheffield City Council has won a court battle to bring injunctions against protesters taking “unlawful direct action” to prevent trees being felled. About 5,000 trees have been cut down after being assessed as diseased, dying or dangerous, but campaigners say some healthy trees have also been lost. Orders have been made against three people, Dave Dilner the chair of Sheffield Trees Action Group (STAG), Green Party councillor Alison Teal and tree campaigner Calvin Payne, plus “persons unknown”. The council say the ruling will prevent “catastrophic financial consequences”. Under the terms of the injunction protesters will be barred from “continuing to take unlawful direct action” or from encouraging others to direct action, including entering “safety zones” erected around trees being felled. It’s rare that you can leave a gig feeling that you have, in a strange way, made friends with the band after they’ve left the stage, despite not having a conversation with them. The four piece is made up of (in alphabetical order!) Becky Blomfield, Billy Hutton, Chris Webb and Oli Holbrook and each soul on stage emanated this wonderful feeling of positivity, and through their themes of Being Nice and Owning Your Okayness, it’s almost as if you are getting a lyrically hug from the band and feel that you are in an environment where you can let your guard down and just be yourself.
Despite some technical difficulties, Milk Teeth held the crowd by being completely endearing and radiating positive energy in the light of something that could have caused other bands to “get the face on”. A few jokes from the drummer Oli Holbrook sent ripples of chortles and I think perhaps some non-malicious eye rolling through the crowd.
The show was just brilliant and it left us at The Plug dying for more, I think it’s fair to say that we were surprised when the band left the stage and the lights came on! More Milk Teeth would have been the only thing that would have improved a practically perfect performance.
The group absolutely ooze the potential to be something massive and I have the utmost confidence that they will be.
Becky Blomfield is absolute power house, and a great role model for both men and women. Her incredibly interesting article Interesting article HERE from back in 2016 just shows that there is still a lot of work to do in the music industry.

The 70th anniversary of the creation of the state of Pakistan was celebrated in Sheffield with an Independence Day party in Barker’s Pool. The anniversary recalls the partition of India following the end of the British Raj and the declaration of Pakistan as an independent state.
