Law changes around smoking in cars

The law around smoking in cars with children in them changes from Thursday the 1st of October. It will become illegal to smoke in a car when there are passengers under eighteen present. The law change coincides with Stoptober, a campaign that’s been running over the last few years to encourage people to give up smoking for twenty eight days.

Street Film Festival raises awareness of addictions

The ‘Recover Street Film Festival’ has been to a number of cities, showcasing short films showing how people have recovered from addictions. The festival aims to raise awareness of drug and alcohol related problems. But instead of showcasing the films in a cinema, they were screened on Fargate. Shoppers were invited to grab a pair of headphones and watch the videos.

First ‘zero-emissions’ hydrogen filling station opens

A zero-emissions refuelling station for hydrogen-powered cars – claimed to be the first of its kind in the country – has opened. ITM Power created the site at the Advanced Manufacturing Park near the M1 in Rotherham. It uses electricity generated by a wind turbine to split water into its constituent parts which are hydrogen and oxygen. The company says a hydrogen car could now fill up with enough fuel for it to reach London from South Yorkshire and that it only emits water vapour as it runs. They also say that because fossil fuels are not used in the production process, the station is the first carbon-neutral with zero emissions. Sheffield Live went down to find out more…

Archbishop of York visits The Moor Market

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has visited the Moor Market in Sheffield as part of the Crossroads Mission in the region. He’s visited many locations including schools, universities, churches, community centres and pubs. His visit involves twenty one other bishops, including Bishop Libby Lane, the first woman to be appointed as a Bishop in the Church of England. He spoke to a number of traders in the Moor Market.

Queen Elizabeth II Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch

Queen Elizabeth the second has become Britain’s longest reigning monarch, passing the record set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. She’s reigned for sixty three years and seven months. The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, has been working as usual today. She’s visited Edinburgh, Midlothian and Tweedbank for the Scottish Borders Railway opening celebrations. The Royal couple made a steam train journey with Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Dementia Action Alliance

Organisations and charities across Sheffield who support people with dementia and their families were in the City Hall to offer advice to the public earlier today. The event, organised by Sheffield Dementia Action Alliance, is part of a social movement and aims to help reduce any stigmas around dementia.

‘Refugees welcome’ protest held in Sheffield

Hundreds of migrants have resumed their journey through Austria to Germany after Hungary’s decision on Friday to let them through. Several trains arrived at Munich station in the early hours of Sunday morning, many migrants travelling on to other German cities for processing. Trains are taking hundreds more to Vienna from Austria’s border with Hungary. The Pope said every Catholic parish in Europe should host a migrant family. He added humanity must give help to those “fleeing death” and who are “victims of war and hunger and setting out on the path to a better life”. Well here in Sheffield today there was protest at town hall to raise awareness for the need to help, I spoke Cheryl Robertson who is a campaigner and she talked about the situation….

Labour leader nominee comes to Sheffield

Hundreds of people gathered in Tudor Square this afternoon to hear Labour Leader candidate, Jeremy Corbyn’s speech. The organised event inside the crucible filled the nine hundred and fifty seats available. Before speaking to people in Sheffield, Corbyn told Sheffield Live about his campaign and what he plans to bring to the role if he wins. He begun by talking about renationalising the railways.
