Moor Sheffield and Off the Shelf celebrate 100 years of Roald Dahl

Moor Sheffield and Off the Shelf collaborated in an outdoor event to celebrate 100 years of the popular children’s author Roald Dahl. A fizz-whizzing afternoon was had by human beans of all ages and visitors were encourage to make dirty beast masks, BFG ears or Cinderella crowns. There was even a robot poem generator. Sheffield Live! report Simon Thake was lucky enough to catch up with one of Dahl’s favourite characters.

Heeley MP joins Labour front bench with digital economy brief

Sheffield Heeley MP, Louise Haigh, has been given shadow ministerial responsibility for the digital economy in the latest reshuffle by opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn. The move comes at an important time, with the Digital Economy Bill currently progressing through Parliament. Sheffield Live! reporter Bailor Jalloh spoke to Louise Haigh about her new role.

UKIP puts party “scuffle” under investigation

The UK Independence Party have started an inquiry into the incident that saw MEP Steven Woolfe admitted to hospital. The incident, described as a “scuffle” by UKIP’s temporary leader Nigel Farage, came after Woolfe was reported to be one of the favourites for election as the party’s next leader. Orgreave Justice campaign awaits enquiry decision

Joe Rollin, chair of the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, says there is “no wriggleroom” in the case for an independent enquiry. Guineans in Sheffield to celebrate country’s independence

Hundreds of Guineans across Britain including the country’s ambassador to the UK were in Sheffield to celebrate the 58th year of Guinea’s independence. Events included a football tournament in which Nigerians, Liberians and Eritreans took part at St Aidans pitch and a party at Vestry hall on Cemetery road. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Jeremy Corbyn: Labour can climb electoral mountain

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for a focus on the next general election in his closing address to the Labour party conference. Corbyn was re-elected on Saturday for the second time as Labour leader with a majority of 61.8 percent. He said Labour should build support by focusing on the “needs and aspirations of middle and lower income voters”.

Caborn calls for independent inquiry into football corruption

Former sport Minister Richard Caborn has called on the Football Association to commission an independent inquiry into football corruption. The call comes after former England boss, Sam Allardyce stepped down as manager of the national side, following allegations in the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Allardyce was reported to have offered advice to undercover reporters posing as businessmen from the far east on how to “get around” player transfer rules.  Allardyce left his position in disgrace after just 67 days, making him the shortest reigning England manager in history. Momentum Sheffield celebrate Corbyn victory

The Sheffield branch of Momentum were in buoyant mood as they made their way to Liverpool to celebrate Jeremy Corbyn’s expected victory in the Labour leadership contest. Corbyn has since been returned as Labour leader after comfortably beating challenger Owen Smith. Corbyn won 61.8 per cent of the vote, a larger majority than last year and vowed to bring the party back together. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke with members of Sheffield Momentum.

Women’s Equality Party leader asks what Sheffield women want

Sophie Walker, leader of the Women’s Equality Party visited Sheffield as part of a nationwide tour to mark the 20th anniversary of the ‘What Women Want’ social survey of 1996. Twenty years ago, postcards were sent to women across Britain asking them the same question. Ten thousand women responded and this ground-breaking study changed the course of British politics. The Women’s Equality Party, which has 65,000 members and registered supporters, is asking ‘what do women want’ today and discussing how to achieve a fair future for all. The party was founded by Sandi Toksvig and Catherine Mayer in March 2015. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Sophie Walker.
