Tech North is launched

Nick Clegg, MP for Hallam, launched Tech North in Sheffield this week.  Over 200,000 people are working in the creative and technical industries in the North.  The scheme aims to see this number doubled.

Happy Diwali

Thursday saw hundreds of people gathering in Sheffield to celebrate Diwali,  the Festival of Lights. Candles are lit and there is singing, dancing and fireworks to mark the occasion.

Stop the traffic

A local fair trade social enterprise is making jewellery and raising money for a total of six charities that are working to support women who are being trafficked.

 

Sheffield rollergirl back on skates

A 37 year old Sheffield mum is back in the Roller Derby world cup. Erica Packington, from Meersbrook, known as She-RARR, broke her collar bone in her first public match with Sheffield Steel rollergirls, but is now set to play for the West Indies.

NHS workers take strike action

For the first time ever in their history,  midwives went out on strike. The nationwide action included nurses, ambulance crews, paramedics and hospital porters all walking out for better pay.  The workers have been offered a 1% consolidated pay rise.

Hundreds demonstrate to save Kobani

In the biggest demonstration yet in Sheffield against Islamic State, hundreds of people gathered outside City Hall to condemn the assault on Kobani in Northern Syria. The action, organised by Kurdish community activists, called on the international community to defend communities under threat in Syria and Iraq.

World Sight Day

A new mobile information unit was launched by the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind as part of World Sight Day.   The Unit will give information and advice about how to look after your eyes.

Hong Kong: Students speak out

A pro democracy student group is holding a peaceful protest in Hong Kong. We talked to two students, Cecilia and Kelvin, who are living and studying in Sheffield. We asked them how the situation is affecting them and their friends and families back in Hong Kong. The protests started when the Chinese Government announced that they were going to vet all candidates who were going to stand for election in Hong Kong.
