Greystones residents seek Bingham Park improvements

Residents in Greystones have set up the Bingham Park Community Group to restore the community park’s sports facilities. The group are expecting the council to spend around £70,000 on rejuvenating two of the nine tennis courts but they believe more investment is needed to restore all of the sports facilities. Artists, activists and campaigners shared their ideas and tools at the Sheffield Institute of Arts in the Old Post Office for the workshop ‘Art Possibility Action’. The event aimed to bring together those who want to change the world with their art, and those who want to find out how art can help in effective political action. Sharrow Autumn Carnival offers alternative celebration

Community workers in Sharrow have been determined to offer creative opportunities for local teens after anti-social bonfire night scenes in recent years. Last year local youths in Sharrow threw rocks and fireworks at passing cars and eleven arrests were made. The Autumn Carnival at Highfield Adventure Playground featured local music, food and crafts. Tree campaigners arrested in Nether Edge

Two tree campaigners arrested on Wednesday in Nether Edge were released without charge after seven hours in police custody. The members of Save Nether Edge Trees were engaged in peaceful protest against the felling of a tree on Marden Road in Nether Edge when the arrests were made. Yorkshire writers reflect on regions sporting downturn

Sports writer Anthony Clavane, author of ‘A Yorkshire Tragedy: The Rise and Fall of a Sporting Powerhouse’ was in conversation at the Off the Shelf Literary Festival. Barnsley poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan interviewed Anthony Clavane earlier this week in a special festival session reflecting on the region’s sporting performance over the last twenty years. Anti-fracking protesters campaign for a ‘Frack Free University’

Sheffield University students have launched a ‘frack free university’campaign with a series of awareness raising events. Campaigners are concerned that fracking could come to Sheffield following the recent approval of fracking licences in North Yorkshire. Speaking at the launch panel organised by Sheffield University Students Union were Simon Bowens a member of Friends of the Earth and Tina Rothery of Frack Free Nana, a group of women who have led campaigns against fracking in Lancashire. Sheffield Children’s Centre appeal to mark 25 years

The Sheffield Children’s Centre is appealing for contributions, ahead of their 25th anniversary, to help revamp their facilities for local children. The pioneering, co-operatively run centre on Shoreham Street looks after children of all ages and backgrounds, and it also hosts community events. Built in the 1990s, the Centre will be celebrating 25 years in 2017, and is aiming to renew its indoors and outdoors environment. Yarnstormers decorate Nether Edge trees

Nether Edge Festival got under way with a ‘yarnstorming’ session as local artist Lynn Carruthers led Nether Edge locals through the streets to decorate the trees with woollen patterns. The family festival, celebrating the community of Nether Edge, is now in its second year and features events ranging from ceildhis to cricket matches, wildlife talks and musical performance. Comedian puts new spin on urban wind turbines

Local artist and comedian Chella Quint is hosting a series of workshops on wind turbines as part of Sheffield’s Festival of the Mind. The festival is a celebration of ideas, culture and collaboration between academics and professionals from Sheffield’s cultural, creative and digital industries. The activities and events are free and open to the public. Quint, who has been working in collaboration with Sheffield University, is a passionate turbine spotter.
