Silicon Valley of Sports revealed

Plans for Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Park have been unveiled.  Richard Caborn, former MP for Sheffield Central, revealed plans for Sheffield’s “Silicon Valley of Sports”.  The Olympic Legacy Park is going to be built on the Don Valley Stadium site and will cost around 50 million pounds to build. The park will provide permanent home grounds  for the Sheffield Sharks and The Sheffield Eagles.

Quit smoking month

Stoptober starts today. The campaign offers support to help people quit smoking. Evidence shows you are more likely to quit for good if you give up smoking for four weeks. Claire Holden, Service Manager, of Yorkshire Smoke Free Sheffield says that there are over 70 venues in the City that you can drop in to for advice. You can also phone their help lines on 0800 612 0011 free from landlines and 0330 660 1166 which is free on most mobiles.

Student in top 16

An 18 year old girl in Sheffield has been awarded a top engineering scholarship. Chloe Adams-Pickford won an Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Undergraduate Scholarship. These were presented to the top 16 engineering students across the UK. It’ll contribute two thousand pounds per year towards her engineering science degree. Kathryn Smiles spoke to Chloe earlier, as she prepares to begin her studies at Oxford University on Friday.

Great Yorkshire Run

Around 6,000 people took to the streets of Sheffield yesterday for the Great Yorkshire Run.   Athlete, Ross Millington won the 10K, in thirty minutes and twenty seconds. Gemma Steel was the first woman to cross the finish line, for the second year in a row.

Green Top Circus

Green Top Circus was set up nearly 20 years ago and since then has been holding workshops for local people to learn how to do everything from juggling to aerial acrobatics.

Sheffield music

Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM will today join forces with London based community radio station Resonance to celebrate Sheffield music.  Kafka Chic will be aired at 15:30 today on Sheffield Live! 93.2 fm.  Kafka Chic is a radio- docu drama which explores Sheffield’s Musical history. As  part of the Sensoria festival  Sheffield Live!  will play out Kafka Chic at the the same time as Resonance. Contributors include Philip Oakey (Human League) , Martyn Ware (Heaven 17) and Steven Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire).  Kafka Chic was produced and written by Michael Somerset Ward and Dean Homer.

Steelers back home

The Sheffield Steelers are back on their home ice.  The Steelers had to start off their season  at ICE Sheffield because the ice at the Motorpoint Arena had melted due to a leak. Today was the  first day the team have been able to  train at their home venue. Sheffield Live! was there to see them and spoke to team owner Tony Smith.

GMB vote to strike

The GMB has voted to go on strike for better working conditions here in the City.  Peter Davies, Organiser for the Sheffield City Council branch of the GMB said they want better welfare conditions for the workers.

Sheffield Live! also approached Sheffield City Council and the Green Company but no one was available for an interview. However, they sent us a written statement which said  “We are aware that GMB members have decided to take industrial action at The Green Company. Discussions are continuing with the union and its representatives about any concerns expressed by staff working for The Green Company.

The Green Company and GMB representatives will work together to resolve any issues that need addressing. We want to sort any issues out speedily. If strike action does occur we will do everything we can to minimise disruption and keep as many sites open as possible.”

We spoke to Peter Davis who explained why they have decided to take strike action.

Lord of Hunters Bar

Paul Scriven former Leader of Sheffield City Council was today granted the title Lord Scriven of Hunters Bar in the City of Sheffield.  He made the announcement at a gathering of  Liberal Democrats from the Asian community last night here is Sheffield.  He was joined by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg who reminded him what his job would be in the house of Lords.
