The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind support local people who are visually impaired. Members of a walking group run by the organisation visited Bishop’s House in Meersbrook Park. They were trailing audio transmitter equipment to allow them to explore the museum. Jane Peach from the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind told Kathryn Smiles more about the visit.
Over 300 people have been caught drug driving in South Yorkshire over the last year. The figures come as today marks one year since the law change, with additional legislation, making it easier for police officers to test and arrest someone if they are over the limit. Since the second of March 2015, it’s been an offence under Section five A RTA to drive whilst over the prescribed limit. Previously, it was only an offence under Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act. Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn delivered a speech in Sheffield, at the Yorkshire and Humber Labour Party annual Conference. He spoke about austerity, the junior doctors strikes, and recent cuts to the Steel industry in Sheffield. This was followed by a Labour In For Britain Question and Answer panel. The EU referendum will take place on Thursday the 23rd of June. Over a hundred Conservative MPs have said they want to leave the EU, including Mayor of London, Borris Johnson as well as Michael Gove. The campaign to leave says MPs would be more accountable to the public, households would save around a thousand pounds each year and Britain could regain control over it’s borders.
The Sheffield General Cemetery Trust has received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of seven thousand one hundred pounds. The money is set to be used to tell the stories of local servicemen who died in the Great War. Awarded through ‘First World War then and now’ programme, the project will focus on the stories of the men who fought and died in the First World War and are buried or commemorated in Sheffield’s General Cemetery.
Sheffield arts charity, Creative Arts and Development Space, better known as CADS, have been given a creative boost with more studio space. The local studio provider offers studios to rent out to potential artists at cheaper costs. Waverly House in The Wicker has been empty for a number of years but is now set to have a new lease of life.

Labour MEP for Yorkshire and Humber, Linda McAven was invited to Sheffield ink manufacturer, Diamond Dispersions, to find out how they operate inside the EU, and to launch the cross party campaign. She told Sheffield Live why she thinks Britain should stay in the EU, and the effect leaving Europe would have on local businesses.
Many local businesses met in Sheffield today for a HS2 summit, to discuss where the station for the high speed train should be. The current options are the original plan for a parkway type station at Meadowhall, or a city centre location on the old Victoria Station site. A new scheme in Sheffield called Crowditbuildit has launched to try and raise equity to build houses for young people. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council are collaborating to explore whether new forms of crowdfunding can be used to re-develop brownfield sites across the city region. Hundreds of people gathered at the Sheffield Cathedral this afternoon for Harry Harpham’s funeral. The Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough died from cancer at the age of 61. He was elected in May 2015.
