International TV channel Eryal TV, based in Somaliland, has launched a multi-media hub in Sheffield to support young Somalians and others to get into the media industry. The studio is hosted by the Somali Community Centre on Cemetery Road and has benefited from the support of Sheffield Hallam University. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield Doc/Fest hosted another world premiere with the launch of Boys Who Like Girls, a film set in Mumbai that explores male violence and masculinity. The film describes a young teenager called Ved who comes from a violent home in the Mumbai slums. After joining a project aiming to foster healthy masculinity he realises there may be a brighter path than the one paved by his abusive and controlling father. Sheffield’s International Documentary Film Festival has drawn to a close with thousands of festival goers enjoying the week of events, industry talks, exhibitions and films including several UK premieres. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Doc/Fest director Liz McIntyre.
Thousands are expected to attend the UK’s largest documentary film festival as Doc/Fest opens for its 25th anniversary. With hundrds of films on show, plus workshops, events and exhibitions, including virtual realities and new media technologies, the six day long festival is set to welcome over 40,000 visitors. Sheffield’s pitch to host a new national headquarters for Channel 4 has been submitted with the support of Sheffield Council, South Yorkshire regional mayor, Dan Jarvis, and local filmakers and educational institutions. With the message “If Channel 4 was a city it would be Sheffield” the bid document sets out the city’s offer including potential city centre locations and opportunities to engage with and develop the region’s filmmaking talent. Cities across the UK are competing to host the new national headquarters or one of two new Creative Hubs as part of Channel 4 plans to increase its profile and expenditure outside of London. The local TV channel for Sheffield marked its second anniversary with an invitation to get involved. Sheffield Live! TV launched in September 2014, providing a diverse programme schedule, from politics to poetry, and working alongside Sheffield Live! community radio and the SheffieldLive.org website. The channel operates on a not-for-profit basis and is open to volunteers, community reporters, and independent producers. Sheffield Live TV (SLTV) is the new local television channel for Sheffield co-located with Sheffield Live community radio and part of a new cross platform media offer for the local community. News programming will be at the heart of the new cross platform approach with regular bulletins on both radio and TV, a flagship early evening local TV news programme and a news feed to web and mobile.
The Head of News will be responsible for leading a team of radio, TV and online news reporters including news journalism apprentices, student reporters and community correspondents. They will build a network of sources including hyperlocal news partners and will build relations across the city with the public and private sector and with neighbourhood-based and specialist organisations.

SLTV is a partner in Digital Media Exchange (DME), a project managed by a consortium of partners and part funded by the European Union through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-2013. DME is designed to promote jobs and enterprise by supporting digital media entrepreneurs to engage in cross-platform production for radio, television, web and mobile, building on existing infrastructure previously supported by ERDF and benefiting from investment in a new local television channel for Sheffield.
The Technical Manager will provide support in the use of studio and mobile audio visual equipment and facilities as part of the delivery of Action 3 of the Digital Media Exchange (DME) project, including induction and supervision of new users, coordination of technical assistance, assuring the smooth functioning of equipment and software and maintaining production, broadcast and network systems.

The Enterprise Advisor will provide specialist audio-visual enterprise support for the delivery of Action 3 of the Digital Media Exchange (DME) project (see details above), providing one-on-one and group mentoring and coaching support to audio-visual enterprises.
