Green Party councillor and Deputy Lord Mayor Magid Magid, due to take over in May the largely ceremonial role of Lord Mayor of Sheffield, spoke to Sheffield Live! on what he hopes to achieve. Magid chaired his first full Council meeting at the Town Hall this week, in which tree campaigners staged a sit-in protest against Amey’s tree felling programme. He has also been in the media spotlight as an undercover fugitive evading secret agents in the Channel 4 reality TV show Hunted. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
Cancer fundraising hero, John Burkhill, known as the Man with the Pram, was at a book signing event at the Moor Market today. John who is 77 years old, has raised £350,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and has completed at least 965 races including running the London Marathon 16 times. Sheffield Live! reporter Shamaan Freeman-Powell spoke to one of his biggest fans, Lord Mayor Denise Fox.
The Lord Mayor, in keeping with tradition, bought the first poppy at the steps of Sheffield Town Hall to launch this year’s Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal recognises the memory of the fallen and the future of the living. The appeal caps a year where the people of Sheffield have remembered tragic events of the First World War, which claimed the lives of 4,898 members of Sheffield City Battalion, and the 100th anniversary of the Battle Of The Somme. Recently, we were very pleased to welcome Sheffield’s new mayor; Cllr Graham Oxley into Sheffield Live! for an interview with Irini Apostolidou from Communities Live!, our daily news programme about Sheffield.
During their discussions, Irini asked Mr Oxley about his involvement in politics, the Lord Mayor’s responsibilities, the city of Sheffield and the council’s overall performance.
The interview was first broadcast on the 9th June, in the Tuesday edition of ‘Communities Live!’ at 12pm and repeated the same day at 5pm.
