School leavers get first look at new retail quarter

Sheffield school leavers have been given an opportunity by construction firm, BAM, to see how the cities new retail quarter is being developed. The company, working alongside Sheffield Council, is building the first phase of Sheffield’s new retail quarter located at the top of The Moor. Deaf students come dancing at City Hall

Deaf and hearing impaired students from schools across Sheffield joined artists from the Northern Ballet at City Hall for the day long Teenfest workshop of dancing and drumming. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to organiser Gillian Wilkinson.

UTC Sheffield plan to recruit younger students

Sheffield’s first University Technical College (UTC) have launched a public consultation on proposals to admit younger students. Students can apply for admission to the UTC from year 10 but from September 2018 they could enter the UTC in year 9 if the plans are agreed. Student leaders urge young people to register to vote by 22 May deadline

The National Union of Students has launched a major drive to get students and young people registered to vote in the General Election. NUS executive councillor and former Hallam Union officer Hassun El-Zafar, speaking to Sheffield Live!, said the upcoming general election is hugely significant for young people. With young people more politically engaged than for a long time, El-Zafar urged them to register to vote before the deadline of 22 May. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield students prepare for NUS elections

Sheffield student candidates are gearing up for election campaigning to the National Union of Students (NUS) Executive Committee and other positions. The national student body represents students’ interests and provides advice and support on issues such as finance and how to gain post-study employment. Police and Hallam Union tackle hate crime

South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union have teamed up to tackle hate crime in the city. Students and university staff are often reluctant to call in the police when confronted with hate crime. Hallam Union is working with the police to tackle these issues and to help police to communicate with students and staff where necessary. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Destination Riga: Sheffield students in charity hitchhike

A group of 180 Sheffield students have set off on a 1600 mile charity hitchhike to the Latvian capital of Riga with the aim of getting there in nine days without paying for travel. Bummit is a student hitchhiking society set up to raise funds for charity as part of the University of Sheffield RAG. Riga is the most ambitious destination yet for the society since it was formed in 2003. Sheffield Live! reporter spoke to Bummit social secretary Chris Banks.

New president elected to Sheffield Hallam Union

Luke Renwick will be the new Sheffield Hallam University Students’ Union President after winning the largest share of votes in elections this week. Alongside the election for president, candidates have been canvassing for votes to represent fellow students in a variety of officer roles including sports, welfare and education officer. Renwick, who previously served as education officer, will take up the presidency in June. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Young Sheffield artists showcase their work

The Rotary Club of Abbeydale are holding their annual A Level Exhibition at Sheffield Town Hall where a selection of the best pictures produced by Sheffield A level students is displayed. It includes work submitted to the annual National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) / Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) competition. In the past four years, three of the pictures have featured in exhibition at The Mall Galleries, London. The A Level exhibition is a working exhibition and, with the help of the Sheffield branch of NADFAS, it also features artists in residence. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to exhibition organiser Ken Marshall.
