Poetry renaissance in South Yorkshire

The 2017 South Yorkshire Poetry Festival has been taking place at venues across the region with a series of contemporary poetry events including readings, performance and walks. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to festival director Brian Lewis.

Lord Winston opens Legacy Park college

Professor Lord Robert Winston opened the UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park college at an official ceremony to launch the new facility for 14-19 year old students. The £10 million college on the former Don Valley site will specialise in computing, health sciences and sport science and is fitted with state of the art equipment. Learn to Recreate showcases ethical fashion

The Sheffield-based social enterprise and learning hub works with creative designers and ethically made textiles to support access to the fashion industry. Founded by Olusola McKenzie in 2010, the group brings together experienced practitioners with individuals at an early stage in their career to provide training and enterprise support with ethical and environmental credentials. Sheffield vigil for victims of Manchester attack

A vigil in Sheffield’s Peace Gardens has been held to remember the victims of the attack at the Manchester Arena which left 22 dead and 59 injured. Police have confirmed that the attack was the result of a suicide bomber who detonated a homemade device as concertgoers left the venue where Ariana Grande was performing.

Sheffield hosts Junior Disability Snooker Championships

The tournament, now into its fourth year, is hosted and managed by the Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy. Children under eighteen, with physical and learning disabilities, compete in knock out frames of snooker to win the  prize trophy. Parents and carers assist to ensure the children are safe and fully supported. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Turkish community fears after referendum result

Following the Turkish referendum granting sweeping new presidential powers, Sheffield Live! spoke to members of Sheffield’s Turkish community. The narrowly-won constitutional amendments replace the country’s parliamentary democracy with a presidential system and abolish the role of prime minister. International observers said the vote took place in a political environment where “fundamental freedoms essential to a genuinely democratic process were curtailed”. Simon Thake reports.

Shetland ponies offer fun and therapy

A working livery school in Norton is home to six Shetland ponies being trained as therapy ponies to help children and vulnerable adults. Smile at Lightwood is an initiative of the Lightwood Livery at Mansion House Farm, Norton. Six miniature Shetland ponies came to live at the farm in late 2014 and have since been training for careers in pony parties and as therapy ponies helping young people, the elderly and vulnerable adults, at the farm and in the local community. New police chief pledges more bobbies on the beat

Newly appointed assistant chief constable for South Yorkshire Police, David Hartley, plans to cut gang crime and strengthen neighbourhood policing. In an interview with Sheffield Live! Hartley outlined a new strategy for neighbourhoods, with more officers on the beat, better use of technology and restructuring of the force. Simon Thake reports.

Ducks to the water at Endcliffe Park

Two and half thousand rubber ducks plunged down the river at Endcliffe Park for the annual charity Duck Race. The event, organised by the Friends of Porter Valley charity sees the ducks raise down the river, through the park and onto the playground. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake put on his wellies and headed up stream.

Treasures from the city archives

Rare manuscripts and other historical documents have been on view to the public as part of a special event to display treasures from the Sheffield Archives. Rare items on display included the Market Charter from 1296 and letters written by Mary Queen of Scots during her captivity in Sheffield in 1571. The city archives hold historic local documents and records dating back to the 12th Century and provide access for reference and research.
