Hotel offers food for the homeless

A team of chefs from Sheffield’s four-star Copthorne Hotel have been preparing hot meals for a local charity which supports homeless, vulnerable and socially excluded adults. Chefs from the 1855 Restaurant provided lunches for St Wilfrid’s Centre, Queen’s Road while the charity’s own chef was on holiday. Menus included steak, ale pie and plaice goujons with chips and mushy peas. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

School leavers get first look at new retail quarter

Sheffield school leavers have been given an opportunity by construction firm, BAM, to see how the cities new retail quarter is being developed. The company, working alongside Sheffield Council, is building the first phase of Sheffield’s new retail quarter located at the top of The Moor. Special Olympics GB chiefs herald return to Sheffield

The return of Special Olympics GB to Sheffield is a great opportunity to raise the profile of the games, according to president Lawrie McMenemy and chair Murton Mann. McMenemy and Mann spoke to Sheffield Live! before the opening ceremony. The GB National Games are held once every four years and last took place in Sheffield in 1993. Torch arrives for Special Olympics 2017

The Special Olympics 2017 torch has arrived in Sheffield to accompany thousands of athletes and their supporters. The GB National Games are for athletes with learning disabilities and cover a wide range of sports including tennis, swimming and bowling. Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium will host 20,000 people for the opening ceremony, with ex-Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley headlining the event. Arts for over the 50’s project launches in Burngreave

Arts charity Ignite Imaginations have launched a new initiative working with Age UK to seek out hidden creative talent in the older generations. Starting with a pilot project in Burngreave the charity hopes to roll out the concept to other parts of the city. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to project developer Helen Moyes.

Sheffield councillors welcome HS2 announcement

Lib Dem group leader on Sheffield Council, Shaffaq Mohammed, confirmed cross party support in Sheffield for the just announced HS2 route via Sheffield’s central train station. The high speed route will offer twice hourly journeys from central Sheffield to London. The news has been broadly welcomed by businesses and the public but there are some that oppose the decision with houses set to be lost in the process. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield city centre station confirmed for HS2

Government has announced that Sheffield city centre train station has been approved for connection to the high-speed rail route HS2. The route will provide two trains an hour between Sheffield and London. The decision has been welcomed local businesses and politicians. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Channel 4 relocation could deliver £1bn to the local economy

Sheffield Council have released details of their bid to bring Channel 4 to Sheffield including visualisations of a TV production headquarters next to Sheffield Station. Sheffield is one of several cities that have thrown their hat into the ring in respond to a government consultation on moving the public service channel out of London. It is estimated a Sheffield headquarters could bring over 4,000 highly skilled jobs to the city by 2027. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
