Green Party call for Sheffield to become ‘fossil free’

Sheffield’s Green Party councillors are calling for the City Council to set an ambition of making Sheffield the UK’s first ‘fossil-free city’. In a motion for debate, the Greens are calling for Sheffield to tackle climate change by becoming the first city in the UK in which all major local government, higher and further education, and faith organisations have divested their investments and pension funds from fossil fuels. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke with Green Party councillor Rob Murphy.

London to Sheffield walk for pancreatic cancer awareness

Jenny Christie who lost her father to pancreatic cancer is to walk 210 miles from London to Sheffield to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Her walk is planned to coincide with the pancreatic cancer awareness month of November and, all going well, will be completed in 10 days. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Jenny Christie about her campaign.

Sheffield City Council is seeking more funding to support and house refugees

Councillor Jayne Dunn, cabinet member for housing on Sheffield City Council, is asking the government to give local authorities more money to help refugees. Her plea comes after more than a hundred refugee children arrived in the UK last week from the Calais camp known as the “Jungle.” On Wednesday, French authorities in Calais announced completion of the operation to move thousands of migrants out of the camp. The announcement came as parts of the Jungle continued to burn after fires were set overnight and in the morning. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Spotlight on women in music at Off the Shelf festival

As part of Sheffield’s Off the Shelf Festival of Words, Girl Gang collective and promoter Sheffield Girl collaborated for a music-themed weekend. The event included discussion about women’s contribution to the Sheffield music scene and a participative display to generate a timeline of the history of women in Sheffield music. Sheffield United: Wilder relishing forthcoming Yorkshire derby

Sheffield United Manager Chris Wilder is relishing the opportunity of a competitive Yorkshire derby this weekend as the Blades take on Bradford City. The game has added spice as both teams sit near the top of League One with Bradford in second place and the Blades in fourth. Former Sheffield United assistant manager Stuart McCall is also now boss at Bradford and Chris Wilder talked up both sides at this week’s press conference.

Safe@Last merge with Depaul to tackle homelessness

South Yorkshire charity Safe@Last have announced they will merge with the UK Depaul charity, part of a charitable group which operates in seven countries. Safe@Last support runaway children, young people and their families from a base in Dinngington. Depaul also tackle homelessness and currently have a strong presence in South Yorkshire with their homelessness hub on Eyre Street. Sheffield Wednesday: Pudil welcomes increased expectations from Owls fans

Sheffield Wednesday’s Czech international Daniel Pudil has said that the Owls will be looking to continue their recent good form as they take on QPR at Hillsborough. Pudil was the Owl’s midweek goalscorer as they came from behind to share the points with Cardiff. Defender Pudil said he understands the increased expectation from Wednesday fans after their recent wins and success of last season.

Herd of Elephants raises thousands for Children’s Hospital

The 58 elephants of the Sheffield herd were auctioned off last night at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield raising over £410,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. The fibre glass models have been on display around the city for the past three months to wide public acclaim. An elephant designed by artist Matthew Cooper and signed by members of Arctic Monkeys sold for £16,500 while artist Pete McKee’s elephant ‘Marjorie’ achieved the highest bid and sold for £22,000.The money raised from the auction will help pay for new scanner equipment for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Social enterprise set to benefit from EU regional investment

Social Enterprise Exchange is a new initiative to support social enterprise in Sheffield City Region and backed by European Union funding. The project aims to promote social entrepreneurship and contribute toward jobs, growth and social inclusion. At a launch event in Sheffield participants heard from local social enterprise success stories. Sheffield Live! is a partner in the community-based delivery consortium together with CM Solutions, Groundwork South Yorkshire, Cultural Industries Quarter Agency, South Yorkshire Community Foundation, Voluntary Action Barnsley, and CVP Bolsover. National campaign highlights children in need of adoptive families

National Adoption Week is designed to raise awareness of the number of children in need of a loving home. The week long campaign aims to encompass all aspects of adoption, including the challenges of adoptive parenting, stories of adopted children and those of others whose life has been touched by adoption. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Liz Coates, assistance service manager at the adoption and fostering service.
