Dozens join Palestine solidarity protest

Protestors from Sheffield’s Palestine Solidarity Campaign gathered at the Town Hall on Saturday to demonstrate against what they describe as Israel’s on-going attack on Gaza. Campaigners protest against refugee detentions

Dozens of anti-immigration campaigners travelled from Sheffield to the Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre in Lincolnshire to protest against what they described as the cruel and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers. Campaigners stage anti-fracking protest

Hundreds of protesters took part in an anti-fracking rally at Barkers Pool at the weekend following news that shale gas drilling is to resume in Lancashire after a failed legal challenge. According to protest organisers the Global Frackdown Carnival aimed to “show the scale and strength of the opposition” to the extraction of shale gas by fracking. Animal rights protest against greyhound racing

Animal rights activists mounted a protest outside Owlerton Stadium in Hillsborough to call for an end to greyhound racing. Organisers of the demonstration said the group were seeking to raise awareness of the mistreatment of greyhounds in the sport including the disappearance or killing of thousands of dogs every year. Civil servants in pay protest

Civil servants mounted a protest outside Home Office buildings in Sheffield over a pay claim in support of security guards. The Public and Commercial Services Union are balloting members over possible strike action. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Hundreds join rally in support of university staff

Hundreds joined a rally from the University of Sheffield to Barker’s Pool in support of university staff on strike in a row over proposed changes to their pension scheme. Lecturers, represented in the dispute by the University and College Union, say the changes could leave them thousands of pounds out of pocket. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Tree protesters storm council chamber

Around twenty protesters stormed the council chamber at Sheffield Town Hall following a three and a half hour meeting on Wednesday. Tree campaigners demanded to see the £2 billion contract between Amey and Sheffield City Council that has led to the city-wide felling of trees. The group continued a sit in at the Town Hall until the early hours of Thursday morning. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Paul Turpin, a Sheffield Green Party member involved in the protest.

Sheffield campaigners joins NHS day of action

Dozens took part in a demonstration outside the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Glossop Road as part of a national day of action over the crisis in the NHS. Thousands also marched in central London calling for more beds, staff and funds to ease the problems facing the service. Sheffield campaigners highlighted planned closures of the city centre NHS Walk-in Centre and the Minor Injuries Unit at Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
