Grenfell memorial held at Sheffield Town Hall

A memorial gathering has been held outside Sheffield Town Hall to remember the 72 who died as a result of the Grenfell fire in London one year ago. Earlier councillor Jim Steinke, cabinet member for housing, and Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor Michelle Cook, spoke to Sheffield Live! about local authority action to improve fire safety in Sheffield’s tower blocks. Buskers join campaign to support unpaid carers

Sheffield is celebrating national Carers Week with a series of events, exhibitions and a team of buskers raising awareness and money for Sheffield Carers Centre. A government funded programme to trial a new approach to work related healthcare is underway in Sheffield City Region. The Working Win scheme will offer personalised and intensive support to people in work or seeking work and who are experiencing mental or physical health challenges. Junior Disability Snooker prepares for launch

The National Junior Disability Snooker Championships are set to launch in Sheffield at the weekend, with the competition entering its fifth year. Staged by the Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy the tournament has reached such high demand that applicants are being turned away and the organisers are fundraising to expand. Ambulance service launches life saving app

Yorkshire Ambulance Service have launched a ‘save a life app’ for mobile phone which shows where the nearest external defibrillator can be found from over a thousand external across the country. The app also offers guidance on how to respond in the event of someone suffering a cardiac arrest. Free health checks offered at football clubs

Free health checks are to be offered to fans at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium in an initiative in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University & Weston Park Hospital. The third session took place prior to the Blades home game against Middlesborough with the club hoping it can encourage fans to adopt a healthier life. Dozens take part in Tinsley charity race

Over 100 people took part in a 5k fun run, a 10K race, and a half marathon to raise money for breast, ovarian and prostate cancers and a charity supporting children with facial deformities. The event was held along the Tinsley Canal Towpath. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

World Autism Awareness Week celebrations

World Autism Awareness Week is seven days in which the public are encouraged to take part in activities across the country to raise awareness about autism. Schools, organisations and individuals are encouraged to to hold events across the country to talk about autism and to raise funds.
