Hidden Wounds charity album released

Award-winning Sheffield songwriter and producer Eliot Kennedy and singer Joanne Heseldon Edwards released the album in support of the Help for Heroes charity. Dedicated to the late Jimi Heseldon, father of the singer, the release of the album was timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Masquerade ball raises £5,000 for diabetes charity

A Sheffield sixth former has raised over £5,000 for the charity Diabetes UK by hosting a fundraising masquerade ball. Sixteen year-old Ellie Channer sought to raise awareness and to help others with the condition after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes herself. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Charity toolkit aims to reduce isolation

Age Better in Sheffield has launched a neighbourhood toolkit to promote the well-being of older people and to combat loneliness and isolation. The initiative, launched at the Terminus Café in Lowedges, provides a menu of options and things to do in Beauchief and Greenhill Ward to help older people connect, stay active and engage in the local community. Sheffield children’s charity launch picnic fundraiser

Treetop House run by The Sick Children’s Trust have launched the Big Chocolate Tea annual fundraiser to support families of sick children. The fundraising picnic invites people to get together over a cuppa and cake and to contribute £30 to support a family for one night in ‘Home from Home’ accommodation while their child undergoes treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Ducks to the water at Endcliffe Park

Two and half thousand rubber ducks plunged down the river at Endcliffe Park for the annual charity Duck Race. The event, organised by the Friends of Porter Valley charity sees the ducks raise down the river, through the park and onto the playground. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake put on his wellies and headed up stream.

Destination Riga: Sheffield students in charity hitchhike

A group of 180 Sheffield students have set off on a 1600 mile charity hitchhike to the Latvian capital of Riga with the aim of getting there in nine days without paying for travel. Bummit is a student hitchhiking society set up to raise funds for charity as part of the University of Sheffield RAG. Riga is the most ambitious destination yet for the society since it was formed in 2003. Sheffield Live! reporter spoke to Bummit social secretary Chris Banks.

Sheffield University hosts 24 hour charity lecture

A marathon 24 hour lecture has been organised at the University of Sheffield to raise funds for the charity Inspiration for Life. The charity aims to promote lifelong learning, and encourage the public understanding of science through publications, lectures and other events. Tapton School to be northern hub for science charity IRIS

The Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) has announced that Tapton School, Sheffield will become their new northern hub. IRIS is a charity which aims to inspire young people’s interest in science and to promote the development of science teachers. School students gain access to top level scientific data and the opportunity to collaborate in real time with scientists around the globe and to develop innovative experimental ideas. Tapton student Miles Soloman made headlines recently when he found an error in NASA data. The school will work with other Sheffield primary schools to help develop their science programmes and to provide opportunities for budding scientists. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield charity receives funding boost to provide bikes for the disabled

Sheffield Cycling for All, part of Disability Sheffield, has been awarded a £46,000 grant by HealthRich to provide specially adapted bikes for people with various types of disability. The grant award, from funding raised through the Health Lottery, will enable the charity to offer affordable bike hire and other support to promote the health and wellbeing of disabled people. Access Card scheme to assist people with disability

Local charity, Disability Sheffield, has teamed up with Sheffield City Council and Nimbus to offer a new Access Card for disabled people and their carers. The card will help people with disability gain assistance with shopping and other activities. According to Government research, shopping, as well as other public activities such as going to the cinema, theatre or gigs, are among the most difficult experiences for disabled people.
