Gas safety week was launched today at The Moor Markets in Sheffield. The Road Show promotes gas and appliance safety awareness to the people of Sheffield.
Gas Safety Week is a national event which highlights the importance of checking gas appliances and making sure that people are safe in their homes.
Russell Kramer, CEO of Gas Safe Register, talks about why holding events like this are important.

Sheffield’s Liberian community walked through town this weekend to raise awareness of Ebola. Akai Bazzie, who is the Senior Pastor of Christ Abiding Ministry for UK said they were marching for three things. To raise awareness of the disease itself, to raise funds for people who are affected and to ask for donations of materials such as gloves and hand sanitisers . The Ebola virus has killed about 1,000 people altogether in West Africa over the last few weeks. The Liberian people have been the worst hit by the outbreak so far.

Policing the English Defence League march in Rotherham at the weekend cost £750,000 according to South Yorkshire police.
The march was organised as a protest against widespread child abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013, the subject of a damning report into the response of public authorities.
Forces were drafted in to assist from across England and Wales, for the march attended by 1000 supporters of the EDL and other far right groups. Twelve arrests were made, of which seven have been charged. A counter demonstration also took place, organised by Unite Against Fascism.

Easy Street Theatre Company are performing their latest production at The Montgomery until the 13th September. Sheffield Live went along to their last rehearsal of Jesus Christ Superstar to find out how it helps the kids learn new skills and what it is like being part of a youth theatre show. Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All has entered into a partnership with Sheffield City Council and have gathered at the Peace Gardens to announce their involvement in the new Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon.
This follows from the previous disappointment of the marathon that fell through earlier this year due to lack of water supplies on the day.
Cabinet Member Isobel Bowler said: ‘I am confident that the race organisers will be well placed to make sure that all aspects of the race will operate with great professionalism.’
The half marathon takes place on 12th April 2015 with a new route that starts and finishes in the city centre.

The Sheffield Steelers will play their first home game against the Fife Flyers at Ice Sheffield this Sunday. This follows work on their home venue, the Motorpoint Arena.
The Steelers have played at the arena for 23 years, but faults with the ice plant meant it needed maintenance. The team had expected the arena to be ready for their first game.
Commercial Manager, Mike O’Connor said: ‘It’s just a little bit frustrating when we can’t fulfil our first game for season ticket holders in the arena.’
He said the team are ready, and lucky to be in Sheffield, where another large ice rink is so close.
Rob O’Shea, the arena manager at The Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, said: ‘We are throwing all our resources at the issue. Since a problem was first identified on the 26th August we have been working with the ice engineers to expose and check the pipework.’
Not all the fans will be able to attend the game on Sunday, but they are being reassured that they will see the same number of games allocated on their season tickets.
The Steelers expect to be back in their home venue next week.
A Sheffield farm has become the new home to seven piglets.
They are a rare breed and have been attracting much attention from the visitors.
Heeley City Farm has been targeted by youths over the years. In April there were five break ins over five nights.
They broke into the cash office, but after finding little money lying around, they caused deliberate damage to the farm.
Now the volunteers are concerned for the safety of the animals.

The launch of the local digital TV channel will provide new opportunities to bring media content to audiences, to contribute to Sheffield’s creative and digital economy, and to create and safeguard jobs.
Digital Media Exchange is a project to support digital media entrepreneurs to engage in cross-platform production for radio, television, web and mobile, building on existing infrastructure previously supported by ERDF and benefiting from investment in a new local TV channel for Sheffield. Digital Media Exchange is supported financially by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund, as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development through the 2007-2013 Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.

Sheffields’ own rock and roll group The Rusbies styled one of our best loved live music venues, The Plug, on 22 August.
The very first thing I noticed was that The Rusbies have a wonderful supportive following who would chant and scream which gave the atmosphere an exciting edge: when they threw out a free t-shirt to the crowd it went down a treat – I wouldn’t have minded one myself!
There was one point during the gig where a slightly inebriated gentleman was given permission to come on stage as it was allegedly the fella’s birthday. I don’t know if was a relative or close friend and although some people in the crowd seemed to love the gimmick, for me it really took away some of the shine from the performance.
Despite this interesting interruption it there were many wonderful things about this gig including the vocals. These were spot on sounding very Doherty-esque – emphasised perhaps by lead singer Nathan Keeble having a few beverages previously.
The band also threw out a cover of Tainted Love and they did a superb job of this! The drumming was excellent and it was clear that the group have a passion for what they do, and that others share the passion with them.
At the moment they’re a very rough and ready group who are incredibly down to earth and more than happy to interact with a crowd, destroying any barrier between audience and performer, which is one of the reasons local groups can grow to be so popular.
Missed this gig? Not to worry! The Rusbies will also be playing local venue The Rocking Chair on November 28th.
This weekend a 24 hour Macmillan Cancer charity fundraising event took place in Sheffield. Sheffield Live! went along to speak with organisers and participants, including Chris Murdock of Outpost Wargaming and Dave Wilkinson of Wargamers Against All Cancer (WAAC).
